Author David Annandale joins Derek this week to take on the film The Devil Commands (dir. Edward Dmytryk). David spends a lot of time in the Black Library, but can even that prepare him for the cosmic horror of this 1941 Karloff classic? And are Jeff Polier and Dominique Lamssies tall enough to ride the rides at the Carnival of Souls (dir. Herk Harvey) on Weird Wednesday at the Joy Cinema? Find the answers to these questions after listening to Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Story. And don't forget Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

Recent Ennie Award winner Kenneth Hite descends on Monster Kid Radio this week . . . to take a dip in the lake. He joins Derek to jump into 1971's Lake of Dracula (dir. Michio Yamamoto). Along the way, Ken and Derek talk about Lugosi's Dracula, Lee's Dracula A.D. 1972, The Thrill of Dracula, and a number of other Dracula-y topics. Kenny asks, "Whatcha waitin' for, Derek?" with his Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland, and Professor Frenzy takes us in for a check-up with this week's Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Story - Doctor of Horror. Derek also goes over a bit of MKR business, too.

Two years ago, author Micah Harris appeared on Monster Kid Radio to discuss Charles Saunders' 1958 film The Woman Eater. Micah and Derek agreed to eventually discuss its kinda-sorta sister film The Man Without a Body (dir. W. Lee Wilder, Charles Saunders), and this week on the podcast, it finally happens! And, man, it's a dozy! SPOILER WARNING, by the way! Also, Dr. Tongue tells us what's new in the World of Monster Collectibles, Professor Frenzy has a Bedtime Story, and Kenny has a new spin on his Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

You think we're done talking about Monster Bash? NEVER! In Monster Kid Radio's unprecedented sixth week of Monster Bash coverage, Derek sits down for a chat with author Dwight Kemper. And since Monster Bash held the US premiere of Joshua Kennedy's House of the Gorgon, we'll hear Joshua introduce the film after answering a few questions about the movie. One of the stars of the film is Veronica Carlson, and she participated in a Q&A at the Bash, so you'll hear this as well. Stephen D. Sullivan returns to the show to announce the winners of this year's Monster Rally Retro Awards, and Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland and Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Story round out the episode.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Derek is joined by Scott Morris (Disney, Indiana) to discuss a film portraying a very different moon landing scenario - Missile to the Moon (dir. Richard E. Cunha). (And, yes, we realized after we wrapped recording that we managed to repeatedly mix up the names of the actors, and the characters they played, when it came to the two escaped convicts.) Scott and Derek do spoil the film, so . . . you've been warned! Also, to help us celebrate the moon landing, Kenny brings us a special Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

This episode also features a recording from the Christopher Neame Q&A, and of course we have Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

It's time for MORE MONSTER BASH on Monster Kid Radio as Derek's coverage of the most amazing monster kid convention CONTINUES! Horror host extraordinaire Dr. Gangrene, aka Larry Underwood; Femforce comic book writer and Gooey Films' enthusiast Mark Holmes; and author and presenter Frank J. Dello Stritto all sit down with Derek individually to talk all things monsters and Monster Bash. However, in a Monster Kid Radio FIRST, Derek pulled out all the stops . . . er . . . microphones and had FOUR horror hosts at the MKR table AT THE SAME TIME! Hall of Famer Drac, Countess Carita, Janet Decay, and Grimm Gorri took some time to chat it up! And thanks to one of Monster Kid Radio's amazing listeners, we also have audio from the Ricou Browing Q&A. All this, plus Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Story and Dr. Tongue's World of Monster Collectibles, makes for a megasized episode of the podcast, so get comfortable!

The memories made at Monster Bash 2019 will never fade away . . . since Monster Kid Radio was there to talk with as many people as possible about the important things . . . like monsters! This week, Derek speaks with The Haunted Cinema's Todd Brown, blogger Tim Durbin, writer/bookseller Jon Kitley, and author Brad A. Braddock (who graciously gave us a reading of an excerpt from his novella "Death Doth Hold Name"). Also, from the Bash, Steve Turek sat down with Derek to (finally!) announce which movie took the top spot in the 2019 Monster Movie Madness Tournament. That's not all! Last weekend, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan for a screening of Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold) at Portland's Academy Theater, and after the film, they chatted even more about Monster Bash (it was Chris' first time, after all!). All this, plus Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Storie and Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

It's that time of year again! It's Monster Bash time! And Monster Kid Radio was there! In our first week of coverage of Monster Bash 2019, Derek sits down with old friends and new to talk about the Bash, monsters, House of the Gorgon, film music, silent films, Boris Karloff, Mary Poppins, and more! This time around, we visit with Reber Clark, Dan Day, Jr., Steven D. Sullivan, Kevin Slick, and Ron MacCloskey. And since monster kids cannot live on Monster Bash alone (although Derek tried real hard to do just that last weekend!), we have another Bedtime Story from Professor Frenzy, Dr. Tongue's World of Monster Collectibles, and Kenny's Famous Monsters of Filmland.

I'm living vicariously through Dan Day, Jr. Why? Because he was on set during the production of 2019's House of the Gorgon (dir. Joshua Kennedy). And, not only was he on set, he assisted behind the camera . . . and he appeared on screen with a Hammer legend. He tells us about his amazing experience in this episode of Monster Kid Radio. Also, since House of the Gorgon features four mainstays of classic Hammer, Kenny tells us how these four performers were covered in Famous Monsters of Filmland. Need a non-Hammer palate cleanser in this episode? Listen to Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Story.

Friend of the show Stephen D. Sullivan returns to Monster Kid Radio this week, and he's bringing three movies with him . . . sort of. Steve and Derek start their discussion with the 1962 Soviet science fiction film Planeta bur (dir. Pavel Klushantsev). This film leads into 1965's Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet (dir. Curtis Harrington), which then leads into and 1968's Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (dir. Peter Bogdanovich). Just how this works is something Steve and Derek tackle in this episode. Also we have some of your favorite segments - Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Stories, Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland, and Dr. Tongue's World of Monster Collectibles. (And special thanks to Chérie "Rhuby" Gallinati and Mark Haider for their work on the Monster Hunter for Hire promo!)

There hasn't been much Listener Feedback segment on the show lately, so there's a lot to catch up on! Derek is joined by his wife Brenda this week, as well as special guests Tracey and Scott Morris (of Disney, Indiana fame), to review YOUR emails and voicemails! (And keep your ears open for a cameo by Wednesday!)

Dancember begins on Monster Kid Radio,  and our month-long look at the works of Dan Curtis starts with a great film! This week, Stephen D. Sullivan joins the show to consider how well Jack Palance filled the fangs and cape in 1974's Bram Stoker's Dan Curtis' Dracula (dir. Dan Curtis). Kenny also takes us through several issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland to show us how the magazine covered the film. (Derek had a hard time reading a calendar in this episode. During post-production, he realized that the final episode of the year will be Episode #401, not #400. Oops!)

Earlier this year, Monster Kid Radio asked you to participate in a poll and tell us what your favorite Frankenstein films are, as well as what you consider to be the "best" Frankenstein films. When thinking about Dracula films, it's hard not to think about Horror of Dracula (dir. Terence Fisher), the Hammer Films Production that showed the world that Bela Lugosi wasn't the only man fit to wear the count's cape. Last month, Derek had the opportunity to see this film on the big screen, and he wanted to keep those Dracula-dreams going so he invited Steven Lee (no relation to Christopher) to Monster Kid Radio to discuss it. Ken tells us how Horror of Dracula was represented in Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, and to round the show out, Brenda helps with Listener Feedback.

Put on your diving suit and get start the miniaturization process because this week on Monster Kid Radio, Scott Morris joins Derek to discuss the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage (dir. Richard Fleischer). Also, even though Halloween 2018 is behind us, Derek and Karen keep the Halloween spirit alive by talking about her novel The Jack-o-Lantern Box. Have you seen The Vampire Bat (dir. Frank R. Strayer)? If not, Paul Curtis may convince you to put it right at the top of your To Watch list! And if you have, you already know what Derek knows - it's a solid film! This week, Paul and Derek break down what could very well be considered an unofficial Universal horror film (and you'll need to listen to their conversation to understand why we're calling it that!). And to round out our coverage of The Vampire Bat, Ken Blose tells us how the film was originally presented and covered in Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. All this, plus Listener Feedback with Brenda! Let's do this!

Yes, technically, it's September, but we still have one more movie to discuss before closing out this year's Edgar August Poe Month. Murders in the Rue Morgue (dir. Robert Florey) is the movie on deck this week, and to tackle this underrated Universal gem, Derek has enlisted the help of X Meets Y's Jonathan Inbody. Derek also has some special announcements about upcoming events that should keep monster kids happy through the next month or so.

Edgar August Poe kicks off with a film featuring one of the icons of classic horror - Dwight Frye - as well as a director who would probably never be caught dead, or undead, directing a monster movie but he did act in this one - Erich von Stroheim. It's been a hot summer, and Derek is already looking forward to the cooler weather coming later this year. To help get into that cooler-weather-mood, Monster Kid Radio is celebrating Christmas in July with 1934's March of the Wooden Soldiers (dir. Gus Meins, Charley Rogers). Also known as Babes in Toyland, this Laurel & Hardy vehicle actually takes place in the month of July AND it does have monsters (technically), so when Steve Turek joins Derek to tackle this movie this week, it (technically) fits into the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse (technically). Also, Jeff Polier has another Weird Wednesday Report, and Brenda reads the newest Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles.

Call it Los campeones justicieros. Call it The Champions of Justice. Whatever you call Federico Curiel's film, just make sure you call it a fun time, because that's what you'll hear in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Author Frank Schildiner returns to the show to kick off 2018's Lucha de Mayo as he and Derek talk about this idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could. In this case, we need an assembled force of luchadors to fight the evil Dr. Marius Zarkoff in this 1971 film obviously set in a shared cinematic universe. Along the way, Derek (gently) picks Frank's brain about how he researches the period-specific details for his books, they play the Classic Five, and for some reason, 1979's The Frisco Kid (dir. Robert Aldrich) comes up. Also, we have another installment of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and listener feedback with Brenda.

For the past several weeks, Derek's been talking about the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards here on Monster Kid Radio, and this week, he's joined by the man that started it all - David Colton. David took some time out of his Monsterpalooza weekend to talk about the history of the Rondo Awards, what it's like to award them, how the ballot has evolved over the years, and much more . . . after they play around of the Classic Five, of course! Also, Monster Kid Radio's 200 Years of Frankenstein continues as Derek discovers a short French film from 1952 featuring the Frankenstei . . . er . . . Frankensberg monster. Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles makes its debut on the show, and Brenda rounds out the show by reading your emails.

We've got a bit of a looser episode of Monster Kid Radio this week. Bride of Frankenstein (dir. James Whale) played at the Kiggins Theatre (Vancouver, WA) earlier this month, and Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland (http://shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/) joined Derek for the film. Last weekend, Portland's NW Film Center showed the original King Kong (dir. Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack) and Vampyr (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer), and Chris was along for the ride again. And as an added bonus, Dominique Lamssies helped guide Derek through his first-time viewing of the 1932 vampire film. Dominique also provides a reading of her short story "Bad Ritual." Vernon Sewell), you'll get some insight about the kinds of movies they truly love watching, what kinds of expectations they bring to the table when they watch a classic (or not-so-classic) film, and what mid-80s slasher movie made a HUGE impact on Derek back in the day. Also, Derek talks a bit about Patreon, we have listener Feedback, and the Year of Frankenstein begins here on Episode #351 of Monster Kid Radio. And what's this about YouTube?

Effects artist Joseph Schultz joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio ostensibly to discuss the 1955 film Day the World Ended (dir. Roger Corman). And they do . . . but they also discuss practical effects vs. CGI effects, his being a monster kid father, and the upcoming Carl Denham's Giant Monster. The two of them have a lot to talk about (and they didn't even really touch too much on the Backstreet Boys!), but they do make time for a round of the Classic Five.

Lots to get to this week, so hang on tight! Derek takes you back to this past summer's Monster Bash for two interviews - one with legendary actress Veronica Carlson, and one with filmmaker Joshua Kennedy about the Monster Bash premiere of his latest movie Theseus and the Minotaur. Joshua doesn't know how to take a break - since this recording, he produced an adaptation of Frankenstein for the stage and then began pre-production on his most ambitious production to date - The House of the Gorgon. We'll hear about this new movie and then we'll talk about an older movie - The Reptile (dir. John Gilling) - with old friend Stephen D. Sullivan.

Troy Howarth returns to the podcast this week, and takes Derek on a trip to The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (dir. Harald Reinl). If the movie's title doesn't pique your interest, maybe one of the film's stars will. Christopher Lee is in the cast! Also, this past Wednesday night, Derek went to Weird Wednesday at the Joy Cinema for a screening of Terror Beneath the Sea (dir. Hajime Sato), and pointed his recorder at Jeff Polier and Dominique Lamssies for their thoughts on the film.

Last week, the Monster Kid Radio 2017 Holiday Gift Guide was revealed, and one of the items on the gift guide was the movie Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (dir. Mario Bava, Riccardo Freda). It made the guide because The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan recommended it, so it only seemed fair to have him on the show this week to talk about the movie itself. We also hear a bit about his experience at a recent screening of Suspiria (dir. Dario Argento), and there's a VERY slight tease about something else Chris and Derek have up their sleeve for the podcast. (Very slight. VERY slight.) Also, Derek has an announcement to make about . . . something Strange-ly cool. Also this week, we have the very first episode of The Monster Kid Chronicles by Timothy Price, and we can't wait for you to hear it!

1973's The Creeping Flesh (dir. Freddie Francis) is on deck this week, as is Dan Day, Jr., the man behind The Hitless Wonder Movie Blog. Dan is a huge fan of this film, and while he and Derek did get a chance to talk about it briefly at this past summer's Monster Bash, they saved the really good conversation for this episode of Monster Kid Radio. Along the way, they also talk about Veronica Carlson, independent filmmaker and mutual friend Joshua Kennedy, and of course they play the Classic Five. (And for the record, Derek isn't the first person to mention this week's movie as being Lovecraftian . . . for once!)

There's another new voice this week on Monster Kid Radio this week when Bloody Good Horror's Andrew Roebuck joins Derek to talk about everybody's favorite giant turtle. But which version of the original Gamera do they tackle? BOTH OF THEM! Gamera: The Giant Monster (dir. Noriaki Yuasa) and Gammera the Invincible (dir. Sandy Howard, Noriaki Yuasa) are decidedly different films . . . or are they? Listen to this episode to find out. Also, Jeff Polier calls in his thoughts on last October's Scare-A-Thon at the Joy Cinema, and Dwight Kemper has a few impressions for you.

Author Micah S. Harris joins Monster Kid Radio this week, and he's bringing The Woman Eater (dir. Charles Saunders) with him. This 1958 film is the main topic of conversation, but that's not all Micah and Derek talk about this week on the podcast. We'll learn a bit about Micah's background as a monster kid and writer, what interesting . . . creature . . . he had for a pet as a kid, and, of course, he plays a round of the Classic Five. Also this week, Derek has just a few words to say about the status of Universal's Dark Universe, as well as a few audio offerings that may or may not scratch your monster kid audio itch. Plus, FEEDBACK!

Scott Morris joins Derek on a trip to the far flung future of 1973 when they get together to chat about 1958's It! The Terror from Beyond Space (dir. Edward L. Cahn). Scott may be one of the founders of Disney, Indiana, but don't let those mouse ears fool you. He's a classic sci-fi fan through-and-through . . . although before prepping for this recording, he'd never seen 1979's Alien (dir. Ridley Scott). He and Derek talk about It! The Terror from Beyond Space's influence on Alien, and maybe even a John Carpenter classic as well. Plus, recordings from Chiller, feedback, and a contest!
