Lucha de Mayo comes to an end with this week's movie - Samson vs. the Vampire Women (dir. Alfonso Corona Blake). Yes. We said Samson. You'll have to listen to the episode to understand why. Who's joining Derek this week to tackle this kinda-sorta-not-really Americanized luchador monster movie? Jason Jaconetti from the Bots, Bugs, and Babes podcast (part of the Two True Freaks! Podcast Network). Also this week, the return of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, the return of Jeff Polier's Weird Wednesday Report, and the return of Brenda reading your email.

The Forgotten Horrors series of books are MUST-HAVE books for any self-respecting Monster Kid, and this week on Monster Kid Radio, one of the men behind this long-running series - Michael H. Price - joins the show. He's not the only Michael dropping by, though. Michael Legge, also known as the horror host Dr. Dreck, is joining Derek this week on the podcast as well. We play the Classic Five. We talk about how we fell in love with the more obscure (dare we say, forgotten?) horror movies. And we also run through our Top Three Favorite Forgotten Horror Movies. Plus, we have Feedback, MKR's Year of Frankenstein continues, and there are two amazing movie screenings coming up that Monster Kid Radio will be CRASHING.

It's time for a check up with the good Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) when he joins Monster Kid Radio this week to take a look at the 1981 anthology film The Monster Club (dir. Roy Ward Baker). For years, Larry has been torturing Derek with the music from this film, but Derek really shouldn't complain. A mad scientist like Dr. Gangrene is SUPPOSED to torture people, right? Besides, how tortuous can a movie REALLY be if it features Vincent Price and John Carradine? Derek and Larry discuss the film and the music that punctuates the movie's soundtrack, as well as the latest in the world of Dr. Gangrene. We also have listener feedback, and, hey, there's a Monster Kid Radio Crash coming!

Tim Durbin (Viewing the Classics and Classics on the Tube) joins Derek on Monster Kid Radio to discuss the 1932 dark adventure film The Most Dangerous Game (dir. Irving Pichel, Ernest B. Schoedsack). Derek actually didn't know if this movie would fit in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, but by the time he and Tim are done talking about it, we think you'll agree it's required Monster Kid viewing! Also, we can't NOT talk about Universal's attempt to launch a new cinematic world of gods and monsters with 2017's The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Derek and his wife saw it, and was joined by Tom Daufel for a quick discussion about the movie. Also, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan has a few things to say about the film, as does author Stephen D. Sullivan. All this, plus listener voicemails and even a contest is waiting for you in this week's epic-sized episode of Monster Kid Radio!

First, Fiona Young-Brown (https://www.fionayoungbrown.com/) and Nic Brown (http://www.bmovieman.com/) stop by to talk about their upcoming book The B-Movie Cookbook! This book is set to release soon (and you can still pre-order your copy now!), and after talking with this real-life writing power couple about it, Derek feels like he needs a snack! There's no time for snacking, though, because there's still that upcoming mummy movie to talk about. For the final time BEFORE its release, Stephen D. Sullivan (author of Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors and a number of other awesome monster-kid-friendly books) talks with Derek (again!) about The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). You'll get this on this week's on Monster Kid Radio, plus listener feedback!

Kong: Long Live the King (dir. Frank Dietz, Trish Geiger) is making the festival and convention rounds, and Derek was able to attend the Portland premiere at the Hollywood Theatre. What did Derek think of the documentary? Well, he liked it, but you'll get to hear just HOW MUCH he liked it this week on Monster Kid Radio. After the screening, organizer Greg Hamilton led a Q&A session with Frank Dietz and special effects artist Chris Walas. Also earlier this week, the ballot for the 15th Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Films Awards was announced, and Monster Kid Radio is honored to on the ballot this year for Best Multi-Media Horror Site. A number of previous MKR guests also made the ballot this year, and you'll who about them this week. And, finally, Derek was tickled to hear a non-horror podcast tackle a monster kid "classic."

Monster Kid Radio #307 - Frankenstein 1970 with Dwight Kemper

This week, Monster Kid Radio gets futuristic . . . sort of . . . when Derek is joined by guest Dwight Kemper to discuss the film Frankenstein 1970 (dir. Howard W. Koch). Boris Karloff returns to a Frankenstein movie, but not as the monster. This time, Karloff plays the monster's creator! Listen to this episode to find out why this movie is so important to Dwight and his development as a monster kid. (And when you're done listening to this episode, be sure to check out Dwight's books!) Plus, you'll hear listener feedback and more movie trailers and radio ads than you probably care to hear (but Derek loves them and he can't help himself!).

(And you can find Derek at this weekend's Wizard World Portland, along with friends of the show Sean Hoade and Tom Daufel!)

Somehow, the conversation turned into a commercial for two of our favorite independent retro filmmakers - Christopher R. Mihm and Joshua Kennedy! Monster Kid Radio #293 - Scare-A-Thon 2016 (and a little Theatre of Blood)

The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't. The next night, he and Chris met at the NW Film Center in downtown Portland for a Monster Kid Radio Crash of the Vincent Price film Theatre of Blood (dir. Douglas Hickox).

Monster Kid Radio #271 - Dr. Dreck's B-Movie Museum with Michael Legge

Michael Legge's new book Dr. Dreck's B-Movie Museum is Monster Kid Radio's topic du jour, and who better to talk about the book with Derek than Michael Legge himself! And what happens when two monster kids start talking about monster movies? The conversation tends to grow, sidetrack, and evolve, so not only do listeners get to hear about the new book, but you'll hear Derek do his best not to go too off-topic (while still talking about monsters!)

Monster Kid Radio - Programming Update

On Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call from Nic Brown, one of the co-hosts of the long-running B-Movie Cast, a podcast created and produced by Vince Rotolo. Vince was a friend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many of us, and I was not ready to hear what Nic had to say. Vince passed away suddenly, and if you look on Facebook, you'll see the many folks Vince and his podcast touched over the years.

Next week's planned launch of Monster Kid Radio's Lucha de Mayo will be postponed next week. Instead, I'm dedicating Episode #266 to Vince. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to the show, please feel free to call our voicemail line at 503-479-5MKR (503-479-5657), or email you thoughts or recordings to monsterkidradio@gmail.com . . .

Sullivan - buy his books!), we'll also honor 1941's and 1951's monster movie makers. Last year, the ballots were submitted, and now it's time for the winners to be announced! Plus, Derek has a few words about a monster magazine.

Monster Kid Radio #253 - Chris McMillan and The Thing From Another World

Way back in Episode #1 of Monster Kid Radio, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan joined Derek to discuss their Top Three Favorite Monster Movies, and this week, on Episode #253, Chris is on the podcast to discuss his Number Two pick - 1951's The Thing from Another World (dir. Christian Nyby). There's a reason why this film made Chris' list, and there's a good chance it may creep up on Derek's Top Three the more he thinks about it! Also, while discussing the film, Derek realizes an odd, tenuous connection he almost had with this film.

Monster Kid Radio #252 - Christopher R. Mihm and John Agar

Christopher R. Mihm is beginning his second decade as a filmmaker with his upcoming movie Weresquito: Nazi Hunter. Before production of this sure-to-be-a-hit film kicks off, he stopped by Monster Kid Radio to talk with Derek about the upcoming movie. As much as it is to talk about the films of the Mihmiverse, it's also a lot of fun to talk about one of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio, John Agar, and Chris and Derek do just that!

Monster Kid Radio #251 - Yongary and Stephen D. Sullivan

After a quick congratulatory shout out to Joshua Kennedy regarding recent accolades for his movie Slave Girls on the Moon, Derek gets down to business in the deep with Stephen D. Sullivan. The two of them discuss 1967's Yongary, Monster from the Deep (dir. Kim Ki-duk). Does the recent blu-ray release of this South Korean monster movie deserve a place in your movie collection? How does Steve handle playing a round of the Classic Five? And how can you read more of Steve's monster fiction on a regular basis? Listen to this episode to find out! Monster Kid Radio #249 - Meet Monster Kid/Filmmaker Joshua Kennedy, plus holiday greetings!

This week's Monster Kid Radio guest just had one of his movies accepted into next year's Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival, but before that happens, he spends some time with us here on the podcast. Joshua Kennedy is a film student who's been making waves in the retro monster film community, and in this week's episode, he and Derek talk about his background (he was a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award nominee - when he was 15!), his movies, and his favorite Hammer actress. We also play a round of the Classic Five! You'll get all this and a batch of holiday greetings from previous Monster Kid Radio guests.

This week's movie was featured on last week's Holiday Gift Guide, and this week, Derek will talk a bit more about 1965's Dark Intruder (dir. Harvey Hart). He doesn't do it alone, though. He's joined by frequent horror convention attendee and horror podcast connoisseur Ken Johnson. After this breezy chat about this Leslie Nielsen(!) horror flick - and a round of the Classic Five - we'll hear from Tony Wendell from The Gigantic Project about the recent MKR episodes covering a couple of kaiju films.

The two of them tackle 1932's Island of Lost Souls (dir. Erle C. Kenton). Are we not monster kids? Along the way, Michael and Derek touch on other cinematic versions of the H. G. Wells' novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, but their focus remains on the first (and best) adaptation of this science fiction classic. (Can you guess who hasn't read the original novel?) Monster Kid Radio #240 - Strephon Taylor and Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters

The work of Jack Pierce is undeniably one of the cornerstones of what we as monster kids LOVE, and while we here at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters might know a few things about the man, we could certainly stand to learn more. Fortunately filmmaker Strephon Taylor is here to help us with his new documentary Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters. This new release from November Fire relates Pierce's early life, his incredible career, and even some of his activities away from the make-up chair. After learning a bit about Stephon's background as a monster kid, and a lot more about Jack Pierce, Derek and Strephon go over their top three favorite Jack Pierce make-up designs. For the first time, Derek recorded an episode of Monster Kid Radio with a REAL LIFE PERSON (he's not related to!) at Monster Kind Radio Headquarters when Paul McComas dropped in during his recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. As one of the biggest fans of Lon Chaney, Jr., ANY of us know, Derek knew Paul was the PERFECT guest to discuss the films Calling Dr. Death (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Weird Woman (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Dead Man's Eyes (dir. Reginald Le Borg), The Frozen Ghost (dir. Harold Young), Strange Confession (dir. John Hoffman), and Pillow of Death (dir. Wallace Fox) - the Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Some of these movies are great. Some . . . leave a bit to be desired. Come along for the Chaney ride with Derek and (Birthday Boy) Paul as they pick apart the films, and take some delightful Lon, Jr., sidetracks along the way.
