Monster Kid Radio #079 - The career and films of Edward D. Wood, Jr., with Joe Blevins

Outside of the standards (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Bride of the Monster, etc.) or what he saw in the 1994 movie, Derek doesn't know much about Ed Wood . . . but he knows someone who does. Writer Joe Blevins joins Monster Kid Radio to talk about the career of Edward D. Wood, Jr., the path he took to get to Hollywood in the first place, and some of the truly artistic elements of Wood's films. They also look at what the Tim Burton film Ed Wood got right and got wrong. Listen carefully, and you'll hear Joe compare some aspects of a Wood-written film to Tchaikovsky.

Monster Kid Radio #078 - The Cosmic Creature is coming! Are you ready?

Filmmaker Dennis Vincent is a man on a mission . . . to make a film inspired by the 1967 "not-so-classic" Night Fright (dir. James A. Sullivan). In this episode of Monster Kid Radio, Dennis and Derek talk about Dennis' upcoming film The Cosmic Creature. The film's leads have been cast. Locations have been scouted. Music has been secured. Dennis is determined to make this movie, and if his enthusiasm doesn't rub off on you, the cosmic creature must have already gotten you!

Monster Kid Radio #077 - Meet monster kid filmmaker Dennis Vincent!

In 1967, Sheriff Clint Crawford (played by John Agar, one of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio) saved a small Texas town from a mutant monster running amok in Night Fright (dir. James A. Sullivan). In 2013, a similar mutant monster will take another crack at the earth, and filmmaker Dennis Vincent aims to tell that tale. This week on Monster Kid Radio, Derek welcomes Dennis to the podcast to talk about his background, his previous work on the documentaries The Witch's Dungeon: 40 Years of Chills and The Aurora Monsters: The Model Craze That Gripped the World, and his upcoming movie inspired by Night Fright called The Cosmic Creature.

Monster Kid Radio #076 - Watch Out! Monster Kid Radio Crashes Santo vs. the Martian Invasion

The latest Monster Kid Radio Crash happened last week at the Hollywood Theatre, and not even invading martians could keep us away! Derek was joined by Ray Jelinek, Chris McMillan (The Shadow Over Portland), Tom Daufel, and Rick Myers (The Recovering Ubergeek), and they watched Santo el Enmascarado de Plata vs 'La invasión de los marcianos' (dir. Alfredo B. Crevenna), aka Santo vs. the Martian Invasion. But that wasn't all! As part of the Cinescopio film series, the gang was able to watch the short documentary Viva Lucha Libre (dir. Brad Bemis) as part of the double feature that evening.

Monster Kid Radio #075 - Interview with Argoman, Roger Browne

He fights robots, he thwarted the evil Queen of the World, and appears on Monster Kid Radio. Roger Browne, the man behind the mask of Argoman, The Fantastic Superman (dir. Sergio Grieco), generously spent some time on the phone with Derek for an interview for this episode of the podcast. Monster Kid Radio owes a huge thank you to Dorado Films for helping make this interview possible, and, of course, we also want to send Roger a huge thanks for answering all of Derek's questions!

Monster Kid Radio #074 - Daniel Horne and the Fairy Tale Threads of Frankenstein

Do you know who loves the classic Universal monster movies (aside from Derek)? Artist, sculptor, and easily one of the nicest guys you'll meet at a monster convention Daniel Horne. When he's not creating one of his beautiful monster portraits or sculpting a gorgeous monster mask, Daniel watches these movies on a screen he's set up on one wall of his studio. In fact, he told Derek off mic that he actually had The Ghost of Frankenstein playing in the background while they talked about this film, their mutual appreciation for all the skilled men and women who worked to create these movies, and the fairy tale quality of all the classic Universal monster films.

Monster Kid Radio #073 - The Ghost of Frankenstein and Daniel Horne - Part One

Frankenstein's monster is an iconic image when it comes to classic monster movies, but is he outshined by Ygor (played masterfully by Béla Lugosi) in The Ghost of Frankenstein (dir. Erle C. Kenton)? Before you answer that question, listen to what Derek and this week's guest - Daniel Horne - has to say about the film! Daniel is an award-winning artist and sculptor, has appeared in the documentary The Aurora Monsters: The Model Craze That Gripped the World (dir. Cortlandt Hull, Dennis Vincent), and appears on Monster Kid Radio to talk about one of his favorite Frankenstein films. In Part One of their discussion, Derek and Daniel talk about the film's background, the cast and crew, and get into The Ghost...'s story.

Stephen D. Sullivan really likes The Son of Kong (dir. Ernest B. Schoedsack), and as his discussion about the film with Derek continues, you'll find out why! There are a number of successes present in the film (Robert Armstrong turns in a performance that rivals his performance in King Kong, Willis H. O'Brien's stop motion work is better than it has any rate to be considering the stress he was under at the time, and Max Steiner's score is just as moving as his work in the previous film) that makes The Son of Kong an underrated gem.

Monster Kid Radio #071 - The Son of Kong and Stephen D. Sullivan - Part One

Author and monster kid Stephen D. Sullivan (the madman behind The Tournament of Death 3) returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about a classic sequel that doesn't get nearly enough love - The Son of Kong (dir. Ernest B. Schoedsack). Released just nine months after the original King Kong, The Son of Kong follows what happened to filmmaker and showman Carl Denham after the Eighth Wonder of the world had his way with New York City. Here's a hint? Denham is on nobody's favorite persons list . . . except for Derek and Steve. They love him in this movie!
