Monster Kid Radio (general)

It's time for a check up with the good Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) when he joins Monster Kid Radio this week to take a look at the 1981 anthology film The Monster Club (dir. Roy Ward Baker). For years, Larry has been torturing Derek with the music from this film, but Derek really shouldn't complain. A mad scientist like Dr. Gangrene is SUPPOSED to torture people, right? Besides, how tortuous can a movie REALLY be if it features Vincent Price and John Carradine? Derek and Larry discuss the film and the music that punctuates the movie's soundtrack, as well as the latest in the world of Dr. Gangrene. We also have listener feedback, and, hey, there's a Monster Kid Radio Crash coming!

Tim Durbin (Viewing the Classics and Classics on the Tube) joins Derek on Monster Kid Radio to discuss the 1932 dark adventure film The Most Dangerous Game (dir. Irving Pichel, Ernest B. Schoedsack). Derek actually didn't know if this movie would fit in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, but by the time he and Tim are done talking about it, we think you'll agree it's required Monster Kid viewing! Also, we can't NOT talk about Universal's attempt to launch a new cinematic world of gods and monsters with 2017's The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Derek and his wife saw it, and was joined by Tom Daufel for a quick discussion about the movie. Also, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan has a few things to say about the film, as does author Stephen D. Sullivan. All this, plus listener voicemails and even a contest is waiting for you in this week's epic-sized episode of Monster Kid Radio!

Familiar voices and maybe not-so-familiar voices join Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio. First, Fiona Young-Brown (https://www.fionayoungbrown.com/) and Nic Brown (http://www.bmovieman.com/) stop by to talk about their upcoming book The B-Movie Cookbook! This book is set to release soon (and you can still pre-order your copy now!), and after talking with this real-life writing power couple about it, Derek feels like he needs a snack! There's no time for snacking, though, because there's still that upcoming mummy movie to talk about. For the final time BEFORE its release, Stephen D. Sullivan (author of Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors and a number of other awesome monster-kid-friendly books) talks with Derek (again!) about The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). You'll get this on this week's on Monster Kid Radio, plus listener feedback!

Stephen D. Sullivan, the mad scientist behind Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors, joins Derek this week for the Monster Rally Retro Awards. First, Steve and Derek review the winners from last year's awards. Then, the ballot for this year's awards is announced. What and who do YOU think was the best in genre cinema in 1933, 1943, and 1953? Finally, despite being hit with a case of monster allergies, Derek has an announcement about something happening very soon for himself and Monster Kid Radio!

Jeff Owens, co-host of the Classic Horrors Club podcast, joins Derek this week to take a . . . um . . . look at the 1940 film The Invisible Man Returns (dir. Joe May). When Jeff isn't working on his own podcast with his co-host (and long-time Monster Kid Radio friend Rich Chamberlain), he's running his site Classic Horrors Club, or writing for Boom Howdy or Downright Creepy, he's been dreaming of the day he'll get to play the Classic Five on Monster Kid Radio. Lucky for Jeff, we get to do that this week, too!

Animator, filmmaker, monster kid Mark Bailey joins Monster Kid Radio this week to talk about, among other things, the New York City Giant Monster Attack Map. This incredible project spotlights a number of monster movies (and video games, comics, etc.!) that take the Big Apple and turn it into a giant monster playground. Mark tells Derek (and the listeners) about his background, and they even play a round of the Classic Five. Also in this episode, we have some feedback from fellow podcaster Rod Barnett, and we take a look at this year's winners of the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards.

Clearly, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is copying Monster Kid Radio . . . right? Okay, not really. But it IS a happy (?) accident that MST3k covered The Beast of Hollow Mountain (dir. Edward Nassour, Ismael Rodríguez) and released their episode to Netflix right around the same time Anthony Wendel joined Derek on the podcast to talk about the movie! Anthony is a long-time fan of all things monstrously large, and he's putting his experience and expertise to good use with the release of his book The Handbook for Surviving a Giant Monster Attack, which is available now from Severed Press.
