Monster Kid Radio

We might call this week's movie Santo vs. the Blob, but was it ever REALLY called that? SHOULD it be called that? Find out this week on Monster Kid Radio when Jonathan Inbody (from the X Meets Y podcast) joins Derek to tackle the 1973 film Santo contra los asesinos de otros mundos (dir. Rubén Galindo). Also, Jeff Polier calls in his Weird Wednesday Report on the film The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? (dir. Ray Dennis Steckler).

In 1970, one of the greatest films OF ALL TIME was released. That movie? Santo and Blue Demon Against the Monsters (dir. Gilberto Martínez Solares). And this week, Mark Pedersen (Dr. Tongue's I Had That Shoppe) continues his stay at Monster Kid Radio to help Derek through this amazing movie. El Santo? Blue Demon? Zombies? A mummy? And Franquestain? That's just the tip of the monster iceberg! Also this week, Jason Jaconetti (Bots, Bugs, and Babes) sends us a round of the Classic Five he played with his father, Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and Feedback with Brenda.

René Cardona's 1969 film Santo and Dracula's Treasure, or Santo en El tesoro de Drácula, is the movie on deck this week, but Derek isn't going to tackle this movie alone. He's joined by the man behind Dr. Tongue's - Mark Pedersen. Mark is a toy collector and toy shop owner, and he loves his luchador monster movies as much as, if not more, than Derek, and you're going to hear all about it in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Along the way, Mark plays a round of the Classic Five, he and Derek discover they have another mutual sub-genre-specific love, and Derek reveals the one place he keeps his vinyl monster toys. Plus Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles!

Call it Los campeones justicieros. Call it The Champions of Justice. Whatever you call Federico Curiel's film, just make sure you call it a fun time, because that's what you'll hear in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Author Frank Schildiner returns to the show to kick off 2018's Lucha de Mayo as he and Derek talk about this idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could. In this case, we need an assembled force of luchadors to fight the evil Dr. Marius Zarkoff in this 1971 film obviously set in a shared cinematic universe. Along the way, Derek (gently) picks Frank's brain about how he researches the period-specific details for his books, they play the Classic Five, and for some reason, 1979's The Frisco Kid (dir. Robert Aldrich) comes up. Also, we have another installment of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and listener feedback with Brenda.

For the past several weeks, Derek's been talking about the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards here on Monster Kid Radio, and this week, he's joined by the man that started it all - David Colton. David took some time out of his Monsterpalooza weekend to talk about the history of the Rondo Awards, what it's like to award them, how the ballot has evolved over the years, and much more . . . after they play around of the Classic Five, of course! Also, Monster Kid Radio's 200 Years of Frankenstein continues as Derek discovers a short French film from 1952 featuring the Frankenstei . . . er . . . Frankensberg monster. Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles makes its debut on the show, and Brenda rounds out the show by reading your emails.

It's an abbreviated show this week, but it's not how long the podcast is that matters - it's how you use it. We've got a bit of a looser episode of Monster Kid Radio this week. Bride of Frankenstein (dir. James Whale) played at the Kiggins Theatre (Vancouver, WA) earlier this month, and Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland (http://shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/) joined Derek for the film. Last weekend, Portland's NW Film Center showed the original King Kong (dir. Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack) and Vampyr (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer), and Chris was along for the ride again. And as an added bonus, Dominique Lamssies helped guide Derek through his first-time viewing of the 1932 vampire film. Dominique also provides a reading of her short story "Bad Ritual." All this, plus FEEDBACK.

The Forgotten Horrors series of books are MUST-HAVE books for any self-respecting Monster Kid, and this week on Monster Kid Radio, one of the men behind this long-running series - Michael H. Price - joins the show. He's not the only Michael dropping by, though. Michael Legge, also known as the horror host Dr. Dreck, is joining Derek this week on the podcast as well. We play the Classic Five. We talk about how we fell in love with the more obscure (dare we say, forgotten?) horror movies. And we also run through our Top Three Favorite Forgotten Horror Movies. Plus, we have Feedback, MKR's Year of Frankenstein continues, and there are two amazing movie screenings coming up that Monster Kid Radio will be CRASHING.

In mid-2017, author Stephen D. Sullivan joined Derek for a conversation about an underrated and under-served Karloff-Lee-Steele film. This is that recording. But not only do you get a conversation between Steve and Derek about 1968's Curse of the Crimson Altar (dir. Vernon Sewell), you'll get some insight about the kinds of movies they truly love watching, what kinds of expectations they bring to the table when they watch a classic (or not-so-classic) film, and what mid-80s slasher movie made a HUGE impact on Derek back in the day. Also, Derek talks a bit about Patreon, we have listener Feedback, and the Year of Frankenstein begins here on Episode #351 of Monster Kid Radio. And what's this about YouTube?

And they do . . . but they also discuss practical effects vs. CGI effects, his being a monster kid father, and the upcoming Carl Denham's Giant Monster. The two of them have a lot to talk about (and they didn't even really touch too much on the Backstreet Boys!), but they do make time for a round of the Classic Five.

Lots to get to this week, so hang on tight! Derek takes you back to this past summer's Monster Bash for two interviews - one with legendary actress Veronica Carlson, and one with filmmaker Joshua Kennedy about the Monster Bash premiere of his latest movie Theseus and the Minotaur. Joshua doesn't know how to take a break - since this recording, he produced an adaptation of Frankenstein for the stage and then began pre-production on his most ambitious production to date - The House of the Gorgon. We'll hear about this new movie and then we'll talk about an older movie - The Reptile (dir. John Gilling) - with old friend Stephen D. Sullivan.

We also hear a bit about his experience at a recent screening of Suspiria (dir. Dario Argento), and there's a VERY slight tease about something else Chris and Derek have up their sleeve for the podcast. (Very slight. VERY slight.) By the time you hear this episode, the latest Christopher R. Mihm film Demon with the Atomic Brain has had its world premiere, and to celebrate the 12th film (in 12 years!) of the Mihmiverse, Derek is joined by Mihmiverse super fan Steven Turek to journey through the movies. Derek met MKR listener Steven at Monster Bash, so they catch up for a moment before diving into their discussion. Afterward, we'll hear from three Monster Kid Radio regulars - Rich Chamberlain, Jeff Owens, and Stephen D. Sullivan - who attended the premiere and got together afterward to share their thoughts on the film with Monster Kid Radio.

At Monster Bash, author Frank Dello Stritto took us all to ghoul school on the 1943 film The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers) and its place in Dracula-movie-dom. It was a fantastic presentation, and Frank was kind enough to spend some time with Derek between events at the Bash to make a private recording of his talk. Do you know who hadn't seen The Return of the Vampire before the Bash? Scott Morris, and he shares his thoughts on the film, as well as on the movie shown as a drive-in feature at the Bash - 1958's How to Make a Monster (dir. Herbert L. Strock).

Also, we can't NOT talk about Universal's attempt to launch a new cinematic world of gods and monsters with 2017's The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Derek and his wife saw it, and was joined by Tom Daufel for a quick discussion about the movie. Also, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan has a few things to say about the film, as does author Stephen D. Sullivan. There's no time for snacking, though, because there's still that upcoming mummy movie to talk about. For the final time BEFORE its release, Stephen D. Sullivan (author of Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors and a number of other awesome monster-kid-friendly books) talks with Derek (again!) about The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). You'll get this on this week's on Monster Kid Radio, plus listener feedback!

Clearly, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is copying Monster Kid Radio . . . right? Okay, not really. But it IS a happy (?) accident that MST3k covered The Beast of Hollow Mountain (dir. Monster Kid Radio #307 - Frankenstein 1970 with Dwight Kemper

This week, Monster Kid Radio gets futuristic . . . sort of . . . when Derek is joined by guest Dwight Kemper to discuss the film Frankenstein 1970 (dir. Howard W. Koch). Boris Karloff returns to a Frankenstein movie, but not as the monster. This time, Karloff plays the monster's creator! Listen to this episode to find out why this movie is so important to Dwight and his development as a monster kid. (And when you're done listening to this episode, be sure to check out Dwight's books!) Plus, you'll hear listener feedback and more movie trailers and radio ads than you probably care to hear (but Derek loves them and he can't help himself!).

Before wrapping up this week's episode, Derek reflects on the Ultraman double feature he recently attended at the Hollywood Theatre.

Monster Kid Radio #303 - Monster Kid Movie Maker Joshua Kennedy

Recent film school graduate Joshua Kennedy returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about his most recent film - The Alpha Omega Man - and the next project in the works - Theseus and the Minotaur. Of course, a couple of monster kids can't get together to talk shop without several tangents turning up in the conversation, so everything from Star Wars to the Universal monster universe comes up as well! Also, Derek hears from a listener over 9000 miles away from Monster Kid Radio Central.

The Kong-versation Kong-tinues this week on Monster Kid Radio and Derek and guest Paul McComas talk more about the 1976 King Kong (dir. John Guillermin) and how it Kong-pares to the original film and the 2005 remake. They also address the assertion made by 1976 Second Unit Director William Kronick when he said, "Kong is a fantastic beast and audiences have more affinity for him than they do for Frankenstein or other screen monsters." Monster Kid Radio #295 - A Kong-versation with Paul McComas, Part One

This week begins a truly epic Kong-versation with returning guest Paul McComas. It will only take you a few minutes into the conversation to realize Paul really enjoys the 1976 King Kong (dir. John Guillermin), but all three versions of King Kong will get their due as well. It wasn't planned this way, but since Derek and Paul had such a great, in-depth conversation, this is only Part One of their exploration of the films.

Monster Kid Radio #293 - Scare-A-Thon 2016 (and a little Theatre of Blood)

The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't. The next night, he and Chris met at the NW Film Center in downtown Portland for a Monster Kid Radio Crash of the Vincent Price film Theatre of Blood (dir. Douglas Hickox).

Monster Kid Radio #283 - The Giant Spider Invasion with Tony Wendel

Monster Kid Radio visits the 1970s when Tony Wendel (The Gigantic Project, Monkeys Fighting Robots) joins Derek to discuss the 1975 film The Giant Spider Invasion (dir. Bill Rebane). What is it about giant arachnids that terrifies monster kids? Well, Derek never really gets around to asking this question, but he does ask if watching The Giant Spider Invasion helped Tony with his fear of spiders.

Monster Kid Radio #282 - Top Three Star Trek Monsters with The Super Mates' Chris Franklin

This year marks the 50-year anniversary of the original Star Trek, and to celebrate, Derek is joined by podcaster Chris Franklin (The Super Mates Podcast) to talk a little Trek. When you think about classic genre cinema, Star Trek may not be the first franchise to come to mind, but it's certainly something that's on Derek's mind more often than not, and he couldn't think of a better way to celebrate this classic science fiction show than to talk about its monsters.

And be sure to check out Super Mates Podcast #59 for their Star Trek 50th Anniversary Celebration!
