On Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call from Nic Brown, one of the co-hosts of the long-running B-Movie Cast, a podcast created and produced by Vince Rotolo. Vince was a friend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many of us, and I was not ready to hear what Nic had to say. Vince passed away suddenly, and if you look on Facebook, you'll see the many folks Vince and his podcast touched over the years. Next week's planned launch of Monster Kid Radio's Lucha de Mayo will be postponed next week. Instead, I'm dedicating Episode #266 to Vince. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to the show, please feel free to call our voicemail line at 503-479-5MKR (503-479-5657), or email you thoughts or recordings to monsterkidradio@gmail.com . . . We'll be back on track with Episode #267. Thank you. |

It's longtime podcaster Freddy Morris from Night of the Living Podcast making his long-in-the-making first appearance on Monster Kid Radio. He plays a round of the Classic Five before he and Derek talk about The Invisible Man, its possible influence on one of the definitive werewolf films of the 1980s, and horror comedies. Derek met artist and fellow monster kid Tadd Galusha at Rose City Comic Con 2015, and he's thrilled to have him join Monster Kid Radio this week to discuss the 1955 film The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (dir. Dan Milner). Why does this movie appeal to them? How did the classic monsters inspire Tadd as an artist? And what happens when a werewolf is abducted by aliens? The early 1930s laid the groundwork for monster moviedom. Vampires, mad scientists, patchwork monsters . . . and mummies. 1932's The Mummy (dir. Karl Freund) put Boris Karloff in the bandages for a movie whose influence can still be felt today. Author Stephen D. Sullivan joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio to talk about this seminal film. Also, we have some listener feedback. And don't forget - it's RONDO SEASON! Filmmaker and monster kid Joshua Kennedy joins Derek this week to talk about one his favorite movies - 1964's The Gorgon (dir. Terence Fisher). Not only do the two talk about this underrated Hammer classic, Joshua also lets slip who his favorite director is (not that it would be hard to guess!). The Gorgon is such a favorite of Josh's that it inspired his upcoming movie The Night of Medusa (dir. Joshua Kennedy), which will be coming to DVD players near you soon! Also, Derek just found out (courtesy of The Shadow Over Portland) that the Northwest Film Center is showing a White Zombie (dir. Victor Halperin)-The Crime of Dr. Crespi (dir. John H. Auer) double feature this weekend. You know where Derek will be Saturday night! And don't forget - it's RONDO SEASON! Tony Wendel from The Gigantic Project joins Derek this week to take on a gigantic film - Gorgo (dir. Eugène Lourié). SPOILERS AHEAD! This 1961 European kaiju film leaves quite an impression on the two, and even seems to up the ante when it comes to how to tell a kaiju story. It's not just a British Godzilla! (And, somehow, Tony even manages to make a reference to a 1988 Don Bluth film.) Also, remember it's RONDO SEASON! He's the original Dead Robot. He's a Hollywood Outsider. And he likes Dracula (dir. Tod Browning). He's author and podcaster Justin Macumber, and this week he joins Derek to talk about this landmark monster film and it's impact on them. It's a light conversation that speaks to what it is about these movies that brings us monster kids together - we just LOVE THEM and love talking with others who love them. Also, Derek reminds the listeners about why this Wednesday, March 9th, is important.
