Monster Kid Radio #299 - Tales from the Crypt with Larry Underwood (Dr. Gangrene), plus your Holiday Greetings
We're celebrating two events this week on Monster Kid Radio! December 22nd is the birthday of director Freddie Francis, and he's the man in the director's chair of 1972's Tales from the Crypt . . . which just so happens to have a Christmas-themed story in it, so . . . Merry Christmas? Larry Underwood (Dr. Gangrene) joins Derek to tackle this classic Amicus film. Also, some listeners of Monster Kid Radio share their holiday greetings and plans. FINALLY! Scott Morris joins Derek for the fifth and final installment in the original "Planet of the Apes" film franchise! This isn't a war - this is Battle for the Planet of the Apes (dir. J. Lee Thompson). This Apes-journey has taken a long time to complete here on Monster Kid Radio. Was it worth the wait? Listen to find out! Also Paul McComas calls in with a response to a response left in response (as a response?) to the feedback about Episodes #295 and #296 - the two part king-sized Kongversation about King Kong! There's also a message from horror host Lord Blood-Rah about Episode #297! Fifty Years . . . fifty years of Manos! We're celebrating fifty years of Manos: The Hands of Fate (dir. Harold P. Warren) by welcoming back Jackey Raye Neyman Jones to Monster Kid Radio. Jackey's been busy producing the sequel Manos Returns (dir. Tonjia Atomic), promoting her book Growing Up with Manos: The Hands of Fate: How I was the Child Star of the Worst Movie Ever Made and Lived to Tell the Story, and just spreading the word of all-things Manos. After talking with Jackey, Derek welcomes Stephen D. Sullivan back to the show to talk about the trailer for the upcoming The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). The Kong-versation Kong-tinues this week on Monster Kid Radio and Derek and guest Paul McComas talk more about the 1976 King Kong (dir. John Guillermin) and how it Kong-pares to the original film and the 2005 remake. They also address the assertion made by 1976 Second Unit Director William Kronick when he said, "Kong is a fantastic beast and audiences have more affinity for him than they do for Frankenstein or other screen monsters." MKR Listeners also send in their thoughts on the films and Kong's place in monsterdom. This week begins a truly epic Kong-versation with returning guest Paul McComas. It will only take you a few minutes into the conversation to realize Paul really enjoys the 1976 King Kong (dir. John Guillermin), but all three versions of King Kong will get their due as well. It wasn't planned this way, but since Derek and Paul had such a great, in-depth conversation, this is only Part One of their exploration of the films. This week, an old friend returns to the podcast. Larry Underwood, also known as the horror host Dr. Gangrene, brings Derek a handful of cats in the form of 1977's The Uncanny (dir. Denis Héroux). Thankfully, none of Derek's cats (Smoke, Lovee, and Sam) got any ideas from their spoiler-filled discussion about this portmanteau film! There's also some listener feedback (and, again, there are some spoilers, this time about the latest Godzilla film). The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't. The next night, he and Chris met at the NW Film Center in downtown Portland for a Monster Kid Radio Crash of the Vincent Price film Theatre of Blood (dir. Douglas Hickox). Halloween may be behind us, but the monsters are always here on Monster Kid Radio! This week, Craig Beam takes a brief vacation from the Twilight Zone to join Derek to discuss 1958's Monster on the Campus (dir. Jack Arnold). This movie came near the end of Universal's run of science fiction monsters. Does this movie cycle go out with a bang, or does it need to go back to school?
