Film historian and author Troy Howarth (So Deadly, So Perverse: 50 Years of Italian Giallo Films, Tome of Terror: Horror Films of the Silent Era (Volume 1), The Haunted World of Mario Bava, etc.) joins Derek this week for a look at a poverty row horror film featuring one of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio - Bela Lugosi. The movie? 1943's The Ape Man (dir. William Beaudine). Monster kid Greg Starrett returns to Monster Kid Radio this week to join Derek for a conversation about the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs (dir. Paul Leni). The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't. The next night, he and Chris met at the NW Film Center in downtown Portland for a Monster Kid Radio Crash of the Vincent Price film Theatre of Blood (dir. Douglas Hickox). On Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call from Nic Brown, one of the co-hosts of the long-running B-Movie Cast, a podcast created and produced by Vince Rotolo. Vince was a friend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many of us, and I was not ready to hear what Nic had to say. Vince passed away suddenly, and if you look on Facebook, you'll see the many folks Vince and his podcast touched over the years. Next week's planned launch of Monster Kid Radio's Lucha de Mayo will be postponed next week. Instead, I'm dedicating Episode #266 to Vince. Filmmaker and monster kid Joshua Kennedy joins Derek this week to talk about one his favorite movies - 1964's The Gorgon (dir. Terence Fisher). Not only do the two talk about this underrated Hammer classic, Joshua also lets slip who his favorite director is (not that it would be hard to guess!). The Gorgon is such a favorite of Josh's that it inspired his upcoming movie The Night of Medusa (dir. Joshua Kennedy), which will be coming to DVD players near you soon! Every year, Monster Kid Radio retroactively honors the genre cinema of the past with the Monster Rally Retro Awards, or as we like to call them, The Rallies! As most agree that 1931 was the year that started the horror film genre thanks to Universal's iconic monster movie releases, we'll start with 1931, and (thanks to a suggestion from Monster Kid Radio Irregular and writer Stephen D.
