Call it Los campeones justicieros. Call it The Champions of Justice. Whatever you call Federico Curiel's film, just make sure you call it a fun time, because that's what you'll hear in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Author Frank Schildiner returns to the show to kick off 2018's Lucha de Mayo as he and Derek talk about this idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could. In this case, we need an assembled force of luchadors to fight the evil Dr. Marius Zarkoff in this 1971 film obviously set in a shared cinematic universe. Along the way, Derek (gently) picks Frank's brain about how he researches the period-specific details for his books, they play the Classic Five, and for some reason, 1979's The Frisco Kid (dir. Robert Aldrich) comes up. Also, we have another installment of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and listener feedback with Brenda. It's an abbreviated show this week, but it's not how long the podcast is that matters - it's how you use it. At least, that's what we've always heard from our doctor, and this week's episode features one of our favorite doctors - Dr. Gangrene, aka Larry Underwood. This week, Disney, Indiana's Scott Morris joins Derek and goes Cajun as they do battle with some pretty nasty critters. It's time for Attack of the Giant Leeches (dir. Bernard L. Kowalski), a movie that Derek's been wanting to talk about for a long time (and not just because he likes Ken Clarke movies!). Get ready for a laid back conversation that tends to drift along other monster kid topics while Derek and Scott talk about looking for Yvette Vickers pictorials . . . I mean, talk about the movie. Also, Monster Kid Radio's Year of Frankenstein continues with a look at Son of Frankenstein (dir. Rowland V. Lee), and FEEDBACK (with A special guest email-reader!). ![]() We've got a bit of a looser episode of Monster Kid Radio this week. Bride of Frankenstein (dir. James Whale) played at the Kiggins Theatre (Vancouver, WA) earlier this month, and Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland (http://shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/) joined Derek for the film. Last weekend, Portland's NW Film Center showed the original King Kong (dir. Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack) and Vampyr (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer), and Chris was along for the ride again. And as an added bonus, Dominique Lamssies helped guide Derek through his first-time viewing of the 1932 vampire film. Dominique also provides a reading of her short story "Bad Ritual." All this, plus FEEDBACK. The Forgotten Horrors series of books are MUST-HAVE books for any self-respecting Monster Kid, and this week on Monster Kid Radio, one of the men behind this long-running series - Michael H. Price - joins the show. He's not the only Michael dropping by, though. Michael Legge, also known as the horror host Dr. Dreck, is joining Derek this week on the podcast as well. We play the Classic Five. We talk about how we fell in love with the more obscure (dare we say, forgotten?) horror movies. And we also run through our Top Three Favorite Forgotten Horror Movies. Plus, we have Feedback, MKR's Year of Frankenstein continues, and there are two amazing movie screenings coming up that Monster Kid Radio will be CRASHING. In mid-2017, author Stephen D. Sullivan joined Derek for a conversation about an underrated and under-served Karloff-Lee-Steele film. This is that recording. But not only do you get a conversation between Steve and Derek about 1968's Curse of the Crimson Altar (dir. Vernon Sewell), you'll get some insight about the kinds of movies they truly love watching, what kinds of expectations they bring to the table when they watch a classic (or not-so-classic) film, and what mid-80s slasher movie made a HUGE impact on Derek back in the day. Also, Derek talks a bit about Patreon, we have listener Feedback, and the Year of Frankenstein begins here on Episode #351 of Monster Kid Radio. And what's this about YouTube? Effects artist Joseph Schultz joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio ostensibly to discuss the 1955 film Day the World Ended (dir. Roger Corman). And they do . . . but they also discuss practical effects vs. CGI effects, his being a monster kid father, and the upcoming Carl Denham's Giant Monster. Derek takes you back to this past summer's Monster Bash for two interviews - one with legendary actress Veronica Carlson, and one with filmmaker Joshua Kennedy about the Monster Bash premiere of his latest movie Theseus and the Minotaur. Joshua doesn't know how to take a break - since this recording, he produced an adaptation of Frankenstein for the stage and then began pre-production on his most ambitious production to date - The House of the Gorgon. ![]() Last week, the Monster Kid Radio 2017 Holiday Gift Guide was revealed, and one of the items on the gift guide was the movie Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (dir. Mario Bava, Riccardo Freda). It made the guide because The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan recommended it, so it only seemed fair to have him on the show this week to talk about the movie itself. We also hear a bit about his experience at a recent screening of Suspiria (dir. Dario Argento), and there's a VERY slight tease about something else Chris and Derek have up their sleeve for the podcast. (Very slight. VERY slight.) 1973's The Creeping Flesh (dir. Freddie Francis) is on deck this week, as is Dan Day, Jr., the man behind The Hitless Wonder Movie Blog. Dan is a huge fan of this film, and while he and Derek did get a chance to talk about it briefly at this past summer's Monster Bash, they saved the really good conversation for this episode of Monster Kid Radio. Along the way, they also talk about Veronica Carlson, independent filmmaker and mutual friend Joshua Kennedy, and of course they play the Classic Five. It's time for a check up with the good Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) when he joins Monster Kid Radio this week to take a look at the 1981 anthology film The Monster Club (dir. Roy Ward Baker). For years, Larry has been torturing Derek with the music from this film, but Derek really shouldn't complain. A mad scientist like Dr. Gangrene is SUPPOSED to torture people, right? Besides, how tortuous can a movie REALLY be if it features Vincent Price and John Carradine? Scott Morris is a podcast legend*. He's been podcasting for over nine years at Disney, Indiana. He was a regular contributor to Derek's previous podcasting venture. He's contributed to numerous podcasts over the years. And from 2011 to 2016, he was one of the co-producers of 1951 Down Place, where he, Derek, and Casey Criswell examined a movie from the classic Hammer Films catalog once a month. Scott joins Derek this week to discuss what happened to 1951 Down Place, what the future holds for this podcast, and why it might have something to do with what's happening with all-things Monster Kid Radio moving forward! Tim Durbin (Viewing the Classics and Classics on the Tube) joins Derek on Monster Kid Radio to discuss the 1932 dark adventure film The Most Dangerous Game (dir. Irving Pichel, Ernest B. Schoedsack). Derek actually didn't know if this movie would fit in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, but by the time he and Tim are done talking about it, we think you'll agree it's required Monster Kid viewing! Also, we can't NOT talk about Universal's attempt to launch a new cinematic world of gods and monsters with 2017's The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Derek and his wife saw it, and was joined by Tom Daufel for a quick discussion about the movie. Along the way, we learn what scared Seb as a kid and what movie truly chills him (it's probably not what you think!). After recording with Seb, Derek later discovered why The Slime People important to MSTies (thanks, Scott!). Also, we have feedback in response to last week's epic Kong-versation with Paul McComas about Kong: Skull Island (dir. Jordan Vogt-Roberts). Not even a Kong-sized head cold can stop this week's epic episode of Monster Kid Radio! Kong: Skull Island (dir. Jordan Vogt-Roberts) has stomped its way across movie screens, and the monster kids were there to see it! Tom Daufel joined Derek for an afternoon screening of the film, and after you hear his thoughts on the movie, settle in, because Paul McComas returns to MKR to break down the film in more ways than one! After all that, if you still have room in your ears, you can hear what some listeners of Monster Kid Radio thought of the film as well. Monster kid Greg Starrett returns to Monster Kid Radio this week to join Derek for a conversation about the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs (dir. Paul Leni). One of them has never really watched the movie before, and since Greg is one of the people behind Veidt Radio Theater and even published a zine devoted to Conrad Veidt when he was a kid, it's probably not Greg who's not seen The Man Who Laughs. Greg even dressed up as Gwynplaine when he was younger . . . multiple times.

Kong: Long Live the King (dir. Frank Dietz, Trish Geiger) is making the festival and convention rounds, and Derek was able to attend the Portland premiere at the Hollywood Theatre. What did Derek think of the documentary? Well, he liked it, but you'll get to hear just HOW MUCH he liked it this week on Monster Kid Radio. After the screening, organizer Greg Hamilton led a Q&A session with Frank Dietz and special effects artist Chris Walas. Also earlier this week, the ballot for the 15th Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Films Awards was announced, and Monster Kid Radio is honored to on the ballot this year for Best Multi-Media Horror Site. A number of previous MKR guests also made the ballot this year, and you'll who about them this week. And, finally, Derek was tickled to hear a non-horror podcast tackle a monster kid "classic." This week, Monster Kid Radio gets futuristic . . . sort of . . . when Derek is joined by guest Dwight Kemper to discuss the film Frankenstein 1970 (dir. Howard W. Koch). Boris Karloff returns to a Frankenstein movie, but not as the monster. This time, Karloff plays the monster's creator! Listen to this episode to find out why this movie is so important to Dwight and his development as a monster kid. (And when you're done listening to this episode, be sure to check out Dwight's books!) Plus, you'll hear listener feedback and more movie trailers and radio ads than you probably care to hear (but Derek loves them and he can't help himself!). The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't.
