There hasn't been much Listener Feedback segment on the show lately, so there's a lot to catch up on! Derek is joined by his wife Brenda this week, as well as special guests Tracey and Scott Morris (of Disney, Indiana fame), to review YOUR emails and voicemails! There's been a slight change of plans for this episode of Monster Kid Radio, but it involves Lon Chaney, Jr., so it's all right, right? RIGHT? Face of the Screaming Werewolf (dir. Jerry Warren, Gilberto Martínez Solares, Rafael Portillo) was playing at the Joy Cinema, and there was no way Derek was going to miss this particular Weird Wednesday! Derek introduced the film, and Scott Morris and David Heath (and a few other audience members) joined him after the movie to discuss the glorious assemblage of sounds and images they just watched. And keep listening - near the end of this special episode, Derek tells you what you can expect for the rest of Dancember.

When thinking about Dracula films, it's hard not to think about Horror of Dracula (dir. Terence Fisher), the Hammer Films Production that showed the world that Bela Lugosi wasn't the only man fit to wear the count's cape. Last month, Derek had the opportunity to see this film on the big screen, and he wanted to keep those Dracula-dreams going so he invited Steven Lee (no relation to Christopher) to Monster Kid Radio to discuss it. Ken tells us how Horror of Dracula was represented in Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, and to round the show out, Brenda helps with Listener Feedback. Christopher Page (Orphaned Entertainment and the Time Shifters Podcast) gets down with Bela Lugosi this week when he and Derek experience a Night of Terror (Benjamin Stoloff). How much Lugosi is needed for a movie to be considered a Lugosi film? Find out in this episode. Kenny's Famous Monsters of Filmland segment tells us how Lugosi was represented in the famous magazine, and the editor of that magazine - Forrest J Ackerman - appeared in the movie Derek saw at the Joy Cinema on Weird Wednesday. Put on your diving suit and get start the miniaturization process because this week on Monster Kid Radio, Scott Morris joins Derek to discuss the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage (dir. Richard Fleischer). The movie has some Disney connections, and since Scott is one of the high muckety mucks at Disney, Indiana, he brings some of that Mickey Mouse knowledge to the proceedings. Ken Blose's Famous Monsters of Filmland segment tells us how Fantastic Voyage was represented in the magazine, and Jeff Polier's Weird Wednesday report tells us what he thought of a recent offering at the Joy Cinema. Also, even though Halloween 2018 is behind us, Derek and Karen keep the Halloween spirit alive by talking about her novel The Jack-o-Lantern Box. Have you seen The Vampire Bat (dir. Frank R. Strayer)? If not, Paul Curtis may convince you to put it right at the top of your To Watch list! And if you have, you already know what Derek knows - it's a solid film! This week, Paul and Derek break down what could very well be considered an unofficial Universal horror film (and you'll need to listen to their conversation to understand why we're calling it that!). And to round out our coverage of The Vampire Bat, Ken Blose tells us how the film was originally presented and covered in Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Call it Los campeones justicieros. Call it The Champions of Justice. Whatever you call Federico Curiel's film, just make sure you call it a fun time, because that's what you'll hear in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Author Frank Schildiner returns to the show to kick off 2018's Lucha de Mayo as he and Derek talk about this idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could. In this case, we need an assembled force of luchadors to fight the evil Dr. Marius Zarkoff in this 1971 film obviously set in a shared cinematic universe. Along the way, Derek (gently) picks Frank's brain about how he researches the period-specific details for his books, they play the Classic Five, and for some reason, 1979's The Frisco Kid (dir. Robert Aldrich) comes up. Also, we have another installment of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and listener feedback with Brenda. This week, Disney, Indiana's Scott Morris joins Derek and goes Cajun as they do battle with some pretty nasty critters. It's time for Attack of the Giant Leeches (dir. Bernard L. Kowalski), a movie that Derek's been wanting to talk about for a long time (and not just because he likes Ken Clarke movies!). Get ready for a laid back conversation that tends to drift along other monster kid topics while Derek and Scott talk about looking for Yvette Vickers pictorials . . . I mean, talk about the movie. Also, Monster Kid Radio's Year of Frankenstein continues with a look at Son of Frankenstein (dir. Rowland V. Lee), and FEEDBACK (with A special guest email-reader!). Monster Kid Radio #355 - King Kong, Vampyr, and a Bad Ritual with Dominique Lamssies and Chris McMillan
We've got a bit of a looser episode of Monster Kid Radio this week. Bride of Frankenstein (dir. James Whale) played at the Kiggins Theatre (Vancouver, WA) earlier this month, and Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland (http://shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/) joined Derek for the film. Last weekend, Portland's NW Film Center showed the original King Kong (dir. Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack) and Vampyr (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer), and Chris was along for the ride again. And as an added bonus, Dominique Lamssies helped guide Derek through his first-time viewing of the 1932 vampire film. Dominique also provides a reading of her short story "Bad Ritual." All this, plus FEEDBACK. The Forgotten Horrors series of books are MUST-HAVE books for any self-respecting Monster Kid, and this week on Monster Kid Radio, one of the men behind this long-running series - Michael H. Price - joins the show. He's not the only Michael dropping by, though. Michael Legge, also known as the horror host Dr. Dreck, is joining Derek this week on the podcast as well. We play the Classic Five. We talk about how we fell in love with the more obscure (dare we say, forgotten?) horror movies. And we also run through our Top Three Favorite Forgotten Horror Movies. Plus, we have Feedback, MKR's Year of Frankenstein continues, and there are two amazing movie screenings coming up that Monster Kid Radio will be CRASHING. The man of mystery (literally) Dwight Kemper returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about a 1965 gem of a film - Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster (dir. Robert Gaffney). After Derek learns a bit more about Frank's upcoming book The Devil Plague of Naples, they play a round of the Classic Five, and then talk about their Top Three Favorite Vampire Hunters. In mid-2017, author Stephen D. Sullivan joined Derek for a conversation about an underrated and under-served Karloff-Lee-Steele film. This is that recording. But not only do you get a conversation between Steve and Derek about 1968's Curse of the Crimson Altar (dir. Vernon Sewell), you'll get some insight about the kinds of movies they truly love watching, what kinds of expectations they bring to the table when they watch a classic (or not-so-classic) film, and what mid-80s slasher movie made a HUGE impact on Derek back in the day. Also, Derek talks a bit about Patreon, we have listener Feedback, and the Year of Frankenstein begins here on Episode #351 of Monster Kid Radio. And what's this about YouTube? Effects artist Joseph Schultz joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio ostensibly to discuss the 1955 film Day the World Ended (dir. Roger Corman). And they do . . . but they also discuss practical effects vs. CGI effects, his being a monster kid father, and the upcoming Carl Denham's Giant Monster. The two of them have a lot to talk about (and they didn't even really touch too much on the Backstreet Boys!), but they do make time for a round of the Classic Five. Monster Kid Radio #349 - The Gorgon with Joshua Kennedy and Stephen D. Sullivan PLUS Veronica Carlson
Lots to get to this week, so hang on tight! Derek takes you back to this past summer's Monster Bash for two interviews - one with legendary actress Veronica Carlson, and one with filmmaker Joshua Kennedy about the Monster Bash premiere of his latest movie Theseus and the Minotaur. Joshua doesn't know how to take a break - since this recording, he produced an adaptation of Frankenstein for the stage and then began pre-production on his most ambitious production to date - The House of the Gorgon. We'll hear about this new movie and then we'll talk about an older movie - The Reptile (dir. John Gilling) - with old friend Stephen D. Sullivan. If the movie's title doesn't pique your interest, maybe one of the film's stars will. Christopher Lee is in the cast! Monster Kid Radio #347 - Caltiki, The Immortal Monster with Chris McMillan AND The Monster Kid Chronicles by Timothy Price
Last week, the Monster Kid Radio 2017 Holiday Gift Guide was revealed, and one of the items on the gift guide was the movie Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (dir. Mario Bava, Riccardo Freda). It made the guide because The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan recommended it, so it only seemed fair to have him on the show this week to talk about the movie itself. We also hear a bit about his experience at a recent screening of Suspiria (dir. Dario Argento), and there's a VERY slight tease about something else Chris and Derek have up their sleeve for the podcast. (Very slight. VERY slight.) Also, Derek has an announcement to make about . . . something Strange-ly cool. 1973's The Creeping Flesh (dir. Freddie Francis) is on deck this week, as is Dan Day, Jr., the man behind The Hitless Wonder Movie Blog. Dan is a huge fan of this film, and while he and Derek did get a chance to talk about it briefly at this past summer's Monster Bash, they saved the really good conversation for this episode of Monster Kid Radio. Along the way, they also talk about Veronica Carlson, independent filmmaker and mutual friend Joshua Kennedy, and of course they play the Classic Five. Sandy Howard, Noriaki Yuasa) are decidedly different films . . . or are they? Listen to this episode to find out. This 1958 film is the main topic of conversation, but that's not all Micah and Derek talk about this week on the podcast. We'll learn a bit about Micah's background as a monster kid and writer, what interesting . . . creature . . . he had for a pet as a kid, and, of course, he plays a round of the Classic Five. Also this week, Derek has just a few words to say about the status of Universal's Dark Universe, as well as a few audio offerings that may or may not scratch your monster kid audio itch. Monster Kid Radio #338 - Tripping through the Mihmiverse with Steven Turek, plus Demon with the Atomic Brain thoughts
By the time you hear this episode, the latest Christopher R. Mihm film Demon with the Atomic Brain has had its world premiere, and to celebrate the 12th film (in 12 years!) of the Mihmiverse, Derek is joined by Mihmiverse super fan Steven Turek to journey through the movies. Derek met MKR listener Steven at Monster Bash, so they catch up for a moment before diving into their discussion. Monster Kid Radio #331 - George McGowan and The Blob (dir. Irvin Yeaworth, Russell S. Doughton Jr.) and Kris Yeaworth (Monster Bash Part Four)
Things get sticky this week on Monster Kid Radio when Collecting Classic Monsters' George McGowan joins Derek to tackle the 1958 classic The Blob (dir. Irvin Yeaworth, Russell S. Doughton Jr.). There's a lot to talk about regarding The Blob, so much so that Derek and George can't cover it themselves! So to fill in some more blob blanks, we go back to Monster Bash for a recording from the Q&A session with Kris Yeaworth, the son of the film's director. Monster Kid Radio #330 - Frank Dello Stritto on The Return of the Vampire (Monster Bash 2017 - Part Three)
At Monster Bash, author Frank Dello Stritto took us all to ghoul school on the 1943 film The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers) and its place in Dracula-movie-dom. It was a fantastic presentation, and Frank was kind enough to spend some time with Derek between events at the Bash to make a private recording of his talk. Do you know who hadn't seen The Return of the Vampire before the Bash? Scott Morris, and he shares his thoughts on the film, as well as on the movie shown as a drive-in feature at the Bash - 1958's How to Make a Monster (dir. Herbert L. Strock). It's time for a check up with the good Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) when he joins Monster Kid Radio this week to take a look at the 1981 anthology film The Monster Club (dir. Roy Ward Baker). For years, Larry has been torturing Derek with the music from this film, but Derek really shouldn't complain. A mad scientist like Dr. Gangrene is SUPPOSED to torture people, right? Besides, how tortuous can a movie REALLY be if it features Vincent Price and John Carradine? Derek and Larry discuss the film and the music that punctuates the movie's soundtrack, as well as the latest in the world of Dr. Gangrene. Scott Morris is a podcast legend*. He's been podcasting for over nine years at Disney, Indiana. He was a regular contributor to Derek's previous podcasting venture. He's contributed to numerous podcasts over the years. And from 2011 to 2016, he was one of the co-producers of 1951 Down Place, where he, Derek, and Casey Criswell examined a movie from the classic Hammer Films catalog once a month. Scott joins Derek this week to discuss what happened to 1951 Down Place, what the future holds for this podcast, and why it might have something to do with what's happening with all-things Monster Kid Radio moving forward! Tim Durbin (Viewing the Classics and Classics on the Tube) joins Derek on Monster Kid Radio to discuss the 1932 dark adventure film The Most Dangerous Game (dir. Irving Pichel, Ernest B. Schoedsack). Derek actually didn't know if this movie would fit in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, but by the time he and Tim are done talking about it, we think you'll agree it's required Monster Kid viewing! Also, we can't NOT talk about Universal's attempt to launch a new cinematic world of gods and monsters with 2017's The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Derek and his wife saw it, and was joined by Tom Daufel for a quick discussion about the movie. Also, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan has a few things to say about the film, as does author Stephen D. Sullivan. All this, plus listener voicemails and even a contest is waiting for you in this week's epic-sized episode of Monster Kid Radio! Monster Kid Radio Episode #322 - The B-Movie Cookbook with Nic Brown & Fiona Young-Brown, plus more chatting about Dark Universe
Familiar voices and maybe not-so-familiar voices join Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio. First, Fiona Young-Brown (https://www.fionayoungbrown.com/) and Nic Brown (http://www.bmovieman.com/) stop by to talk about their upcoming book The B-Movie Cookbook! This book is set to release soon (and you can still pre-order your copy now!), and after talking with this real-life writing power couple about it, Derek feels like he needs a snack! There's no time for snacking, though, because there's still that upcoming mummy movie to talk about. For the final time BEFORE its release, Stephen D. Sullivan (author of Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors and a number of other awesome monster-kid-friendly books) talks with Derek (again!) about The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). You'll get this on this week's on Monster Kid Radio, plus listener feedback!
