Jeff Owens, co-host of the Classic Horrors Club podcast, joins Derek this week to take a . . . um . . . look at the 1940 film The Invisible Man Returns (dir. Joe May). When Jeff isn't working on his own podcast with his co-host (and long-time Monster Kid Radio friend Rich Chamberlain), he's running his site Classic Horrors Club, or writing for Boom Howdy or Downright Creepy, he's been dreaming of the day he'll get to play the Classic Five on Monster Kid Radio. Animator, filmmaker, monster kid Mark Bailey joins Monster Kid Radio this week to talk about, among other things, the New York City Giant Monster Attack Map. This incredible project spotlights a number of monster movies (and video games, comics, etc.!) that take the Big Apple and turn it into a giant monster playground. Mark tells Derek (and the listeners) about his background, and they even play a round of the Classic Five. Clearly, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is copying Monster Kid Radio . . . right? Okay, not really. But it IS a happy (?) accident that MST3k covered The Beast of Hollow Mountain (dir. Edward Nassour, Ismael Rodríguez) and released their episode to Netflix right around the same time Anthony Wendel joined Derek on the podcast to talk about the movie! Anthony is a long-time fan of all things monstrously large, and he's putting his experience and expertise to good use with the release of his book The Handbook for Surviving a Giant Monster Attack, which is available now from Severed Press. Seb Godin is a filmmaker who likes monster movies . . . and slime, so he's a perfect guest to join Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio to discuss the 1963's The Slime People (dir. Robert Hutton). Seb's taking that love of monsters and slime and directing the upcoming film Lycanimator, so we'll get to hear about that as well. Monster kid Greg Starrett returns to Monster Kid Radio this week to join Derek for a conversation about the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs (dir. Paul Leni). One of them has never really watched the movie before, and since Greg is one of the people behind Veidt Radio Theater and even published a zine devoted to Conrad Veidt when he was a kid, it's probably not Greg who's not seen The Man Who Laughs. Greg even dressed up as Gwynplaine when he was younger . . . multiple times. Also, courtesy of Greg and the rest of Veidt Radio Theater, Monster Kid Radio is proud to run their audio drama production The Laughing Man. What did Derek think of the documentary? Well, he liked it, but you'll get to hear just HOW MUCH he liked it this week on Monster Kid Radio. After the screening, organizer Greg Hamilton led a Q&A session with Frank Dietz and special effects artist Chris Walas. Also earlier this week, the ballot for the 15th Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Films Awards was announced, and Monster Kid Radio is honored to on the ballot this year for Best Multi-Media Horror Site. This week begins a truly epic Kong-versation with returning guest Paul McComas. It will only take you a few minutes into the conversation to realize Paul really enjoys the 1976 King Kong (dir. It wasn't planned this way, but since Derek and Paul had such a great, in-depth conversation, this is only Part One of their exploration of the films. The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't. The next night, he and Chris met at the NW Film Center in downtown Portland for a Monster Kid Radio Crash of the Vincent Price film Theatre of Blood (dir. Douglas Hickox). On Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call from Nic Brown, one of the co-hosts of the long-running B-Movie Cast, a podcast created and produced by Vince Rotolo. Vince was a friend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many of us, and I was not ready to hear what Nic had to say. Vince passed away suddenly, and if you look on Facebook, you'll see the many folks Vince and his podcast touched over the years. Next week's planned launch of Monster Kid Radio's Lucha de Mayo will be postponed next week. Instead, I'm dedicating Episode #266 to Vince. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to the show, please feel free to call our voicemail line at 503-479-5MKR (503-479-5657), or email you thoughts or recordings to monsterkidradio@gmail.com . . . We'll be back on track with Episode #267. Thank you. |

Every year, Monster Kid Radio retroactively honors the genre cinema of the past with the Monster Rally Retro Awards, or as we like to call them, The Rallies! As most agree that 1931 was the year that started the horror film genre thanks to Universal's iconic monster movie releases, we'll start with 1931, and (thanks to a suggestion from Monster Kid Radio Irregular and writer Stephen D. Sullivan - buy his books!), we'll also honor 1941's and 1951's monster movie makers. Last year, the ballots were submitted, and now it's time for the winners to be announced! Are we not monster kids? Michael Legge (aka Dr. Dreck) joins Derek this week to talk about one of the good doctor's favorite horror films. Are we not monster kids? The two of them tackle 1932's Island of Lost Souls (dir. Erle C. Kenton). Are we not monster kids? Along the way, Michael and Derek touch on other cinematic versions of the H. G. Wells' novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, but their focus remains on the first (and best) adaptation of this science fiction classic. (Can you guess who hasn't read the original novel?) The work of Jack Pierce is undeniably one of the cornerstones of what we as monster kids LOVE, and while we here at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters might know a few things about the man, we could certainly stand to learn more. Fortunately filmmaker Strephon Taylor is here to help us with his new documentary Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters. This new release from November Fire relates Pierce's early life, his incredible career, and even some of his activities away from the make-up chair. After learning a bit about Stephon's background as a monster kid, and a lot more about Jack Pierce, Derek and Strephon go over their top three favorite Jack Pierce make-up designs. Also, Derek mentions two upcoming Monster Kid Radio Crashes happening in the Portland area! For the first time, Derek recorded an episode of Monster Kid Radio with a REAL LIFE PERSON (he's not related to!) at Monster Kind Radio Headquarters when Paul McComas dropped in during his recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. As one of the biggest fans of Lon Chaney, Jr., ANY of us know, Derek knew Paul was the PERFECT guest to discuss the films Calling Dr. Death (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Weird Woman (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Dead Man's Eyes (dir. Reginald Le Borg), The Frozen Ghost (dir. Harold Young), Strange Confession (dir. John Hoffman), and Pillow of Death (dir. Wallace Fox) - the Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Some of these movies are great. Some . . . leave a bit to be desired. Come along for the Chaney ride with Derek and (Birthday Boy) Paul as they pick apart the films, and take some delightful Lon, Jr., sidetracks along the way. Monster Kid Radio #238 - A Monster Kid at the HP Lovecraft Film Festival and BREAKING STEPHEN D. SULLIVAN NEWS
After a bit of BREAKING NEWS from Stephen D. Sullivan, Derek takes Monster Kid Radio back to last weekend for the 20th Annual HP Lovecraft Film Festival. While there, he introduced a film, participated in a panel, gave a presentation, and interviewed a few fellow guests like Chris McMillan, Reber Clark, and Sean Hoade. Near the end of the fest, Derek sat down outside the Hollywood Theatre with one and only Brian Callahan to talk about the entire weekend (and, of course, start teasing about what we might all see next year!). Ron Nelson continues his stay on Monster Kid Radio as he and Derek wrap up their conversation about the film The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers). Spoiler alert - Ron and Derek love this film! During their discussion, they make if-you-squint-you-might-see-them-too links from this film to The Monster Squad and even kinda-sorta Star Wars. Derek welcomes Ron Nelson to the podcast to talk about what could easily have been Bela Lugosi's second turn at playing Dracula on the big screen . . . except it really wasn't. (Call off your lawyers, Universal!) It's The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers). Before diving into this 1943 monster mash-up from Columbia, Derek and Ron talk a bit about their similar history as monster kids growing up in the VHS era.
