They also address the assertion made by 1976 Second Unit Director William Kronick when he said, "Kong is a fantastic beast and audiences have more affinity for him than they do for Frankenstein or other screen monsters." The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. On Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call from Nic Brown, one of the co-hosts of the long-running B-Movie Cast, a podcast created and produced by Vince Rotolo. Vince was a friend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many of us, and I was not ready to hear what Nic had to say. Vince passed away suddenly, and if you look on Facebook, you'll see the many folks Vince and his podcast touched over the years. Next week's planned launch of Monster Kid Radio's Lucha de Mayo will be postponed next week. Instead, I'm dedicating Episode #266 to Vince. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to the show, please feel free to call our voicemail line at 503-479-5MKR (503-479-5657), or email you thoughts or recordings to monsterkidradio@gmail.com . . . Every year, Monster Kid Radio retroactively honors the genre cinema of the past with the Monster Rally Retro Awards, or as we like to call them, The Rallies! This week's movie was featured on last week's Holiday Gift Guide, and this week, Derek will talk a bit more about 1965's Dark Intruder (dir. Harvey Hart). He doesn't do it alone, though. The work of Jack Pierce is undeniably one of the cornerstones of what we as monster kids LOVE, and while we here at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters might know a few things about the man, we could certainly stand to learn more. Fortunately filmmaker Strephon Taylor is here to help us with his new documentary Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters. This new release from November Fire relates Pierce's early life, his incredible career, and even some of his activities away from the make-up chair. After learning a bit about Stephon's background as a monster kid, and a lot more about Jack Pierce, Derek and Strephon go over their top three favorite Jack Pierce make-up designs. For the first time, Derek recorded an episode of Monster Kid Radio with a REAL LIFE PERSON (he's not related to!) at Monster Kind Radio Headquarters when Paul McComas dropped in during his recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. As one of the biggest fans of Lon Chaney, Jr., ANY of us know, Derek knew Paul was the PERFECT guest to discuss the films Calling Dr. Death (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Weird Woman (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Dead Man's Eyes (dir. Reginald Le Borg), The Frozen Ghost (dir. Harold Young), Strange Confession (dir. John Hoffman), and Pillow of Death (dir. Wallace Fox) - the Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Some of these movies are great. Some . . . leave a bit to be desired. It's finally happening. Casey Criswell, the man of many podcasts, is joining Derek for an episode of Monster Kid Radio. The movie on deck? 1966's Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 A. D. (dir. Gordon Flemyng). Derek makes the shocking admission that he's never seen an episode of any incarnation of Doctor Who (even though he's had friends over the years give him DVDs of Who to watch!), Casey makes a few jokes, and together, they may just succeed in defeating the Daleks. Paul McComas and Greg Starrett are the monster kid tag team behind 2013's award-winning (2013 Halloween Book Festival) Fit for a Frankenstein, and just like with any good monster, you can't keep a good novel ABOUT the monster down! "Monster Bash" magazine recently covered the novel, and Paul and Greg spent some time with Derek to discuss the new life their book is experiencing. Along the way, they talk about their collaboration process, what it was like growing up as monster kids, and their lifelong friendship. Derek is joined by Scott Morris as they both tumble through a Hasslein Curve and find themselves landing squarely in 1970 (or is it 3955?) to discuss the film Beneath the Planet of the Apes (dir. Ted Post). This was a first time viewing for Derek, and - not to spoil the movie too much - he was, ahem, blown away by what he saw. Before diving into the film itself, Scott and Derek talk about what went on behind the scenes to produce (unearth?) this movie in the first place.
