Animator, filmmaker, monster kid Mark Bailey joins Monster Kid Radio this week to talk about, among other things, the New York City Giant Monster Attack Map. Mark tells Derek (and the listeners) about his background, and they even play a round of the Classic Five. Also in this episode, we have some feedback from fellow podcaster Rod Barnett, and we take a look at this year's winners of the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards.

Clearly, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is copying Monster Kid Radio . . . right? Okay, not really. But it IS a happy (?) accident that MST3k covered The Beast of Hollow Mountain (dir. Edward Nassour, Ismael Rodríguez) and released their episode to Netflix right around the same time Anthony Wendel joined Derek on the podcast to talk about the movie! Anthony is a long-time fan of all things monstrously large, and he's putting his experience and expertise to good use with the release of his book The Handbook for Surviving a Giant Monster Attack, which is available now from Severed Press.

Monster Kid Radio #307 - Frankenstein 1970 with Dwight Kemper

This week, Monster Kid Radio gets futuristic . . . sort of . . . when Derek is joined by guest Dwight Kemper to discuss the film Frankenstein 1970 (dir. Howard W. Koch). Let's start the New Year with a new voice on Monster Kid Radio! This week, Derek is joined by author, Rondo award winner, and monster kid David Schecter. David is the mastermind behind Monstrous Movie Music, a label responsible for making all monster kid ears smile with soundtrack releases for some of the best 1950s monster movies around. David is also a writer, a DVD commentarian (is that a word?), and a friend of Julie Adams', so we HAD to have him on the show! Also, we'll find out about an upcoming Monster Kid Radio Crash.

The Kong-versation Kong-tinues this week on Monster Kid Radio and Derek and guest Paul McComas talk more about the 1976 King Kong (dir. John Guillermin) and how it Kong-pares to the original film and the 2005 remake. They also address the assertion made by 1976 Second Unit Director William Kronick when he said, "Kong is a fantastic beast and audiences have more affinity for him than they do for Frankenstein or other screen monsters." MKR Listeners also send in their thoughts on the films and Kong's place in monsterdom.

Monster Kid Radio #295 - A Kong-versation with Paul McComas, Part One

This week begins a truly epic Kong-versation with returning guest Paul McComas. It will only take you a few minutes into the conversation to realize Paul really enjoys the 1976 King Kong (dir. John Guillermin), but all three versions of King Kong will get their due as well. It wasn't planned this way, but since Derek and Paul had such a great, in-depth conversation, this is only Part One of their exploration of the films.

Monster Kid Radio #293 - Scare-A-Thon 2016 (and a little Theatre of Blood)

The spirit of October is alive and well at Monster Kid Radio, and it will be for you, too, when we take you back October 29th and 30th. The faithful descended on Joy Cinema on October 29th for the 2016 Scare-A-Thon! There, Derek introduced five movies throughout the day - Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold), King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. Ishirō Honda), Count Yorga, Vampire (dir. Bob Kelljan), The Evil Dead (dir. Sam Raimi), and Blacula (dir. William Crain). Before and between the movies, Derek was joined by The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan, local literary legends Dominique Lamssies and Jim Smiley, artist and designer Kris of Laughing Vixen Lounge, and the man who brought the Scare-A-Thon to the masses - Jeff Punk Rock Martin. You'd think 10+ hours at a movie would be enough for Derek, but it wasn't. The next night, he and Chris met at the NW Film Center in downtown Portland for a Monster Kid Radio Crash of the Vincent Price film Theatre of Blood (dir. Douglas Hickox).

Monster Kid Radio #283 - The Giant Spider Invasion with Tony Wendel

Monster Kid Radio visits the 1970s when Tony Wendel (The Gigantic Project, Monkeys Fighting Robots) joins Derek to discuss the 1975 film The Giant Spider Invasion (dir. Bill Rebane). What is it about giant arachnids that terrifies monster kids? Well, Derek never really gets around to asking this question, but he does ask if watching The Giant Spider Invasion helped Tony with his fear of spiders.

Monster Kid Radio #282 - Top Three Star Trek Monsters with The Super Mates' Chris Franklin

This year marks the 50-year anniversary of the original Star Trek, and to celebrate, Derek is joined by podcaster Chris Franklin (The Super Mates Podcast) to talk a little Trek. When you think about classic genre cinema, Star Trek may not be the first franchise to come to mind, but it's certainly something that's on Derek's mind more often than not, and he couldn't think of a better way to celebrate this classic science fiction show than to talk about its monsters.

And be sure to check out Super Mates Podcast #59 for their Star Trek 50th Anniversary Celebration!

Monster Kid Radio - Programming Update

On Wednesday afternoon, I received a phone call from Nic Brown, one of the co-hosts of the long-running B-Movie Cast, a podcast created and produced by Vince Rotolo. Vince was a friend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many of us, and I was not ready to hear what Nic had to say. Vince passed away suddenly, and if you look on Facebook, you'll see the many folks Vince and his podcast touched over the years.

Next week's planned launch of Monster Kid Radio's Lucha de Mayo will be postponed next week. Instead, I'm dedicating Episode #266 to Vince. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to the show, please feel free to call our voicemail line at 503-479-5MKR (503-479-5657), or email you thoughts or recordings to monsterkidradio@gmail.com . . .

You can't see them, but you'll hear Derek and his guest this week talk about the 1933 classic The Invisible Man (dir. James Whale). You don't recognize the guest's voice? It's longtime podcaster Freddy Morris from Night of the Living Podcast making his long-in-the-making first appearance on Monster Kid Radio. He plays a round of the Classic Five before he and Derek talk about The Invisible Man, its possible influence on one of the definitive werewolf films of the 1980s, and horror comedies. Also, Derek gives listeners an update on the goings on at Dorado Films and the Dorado Films Podcast.

Derek met artist and fellow monster kid Tadd Galusha at Rose City Comic Con 2015, and he's thrilled to have him join Monster Kid Radio this week to discuss the 1955 film The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (dir. Dan Milner). Why does this movie appeal to them? How did the classic monsters inspire Tadd as an artist? And what happens when a werewolf is abducted by aliens? You'll hear all this, as well as Tadd's responses to a round of the Classic Five, in this episode of Monster Kid Radio. Also - Listener Feedback!

Monster Kid Radio #261 - The Mummy and Stephen D. Sullivan

The early 1930s laid the groundwork for monster moviedom. Vampires, mad scientists, patchwork monsters . . . and mummies. 1932's The Mummy (dir. Karl Freund) put Boris Karloff in the bandages for a movie whose influence can still be felt today. Author Stephen D. Sullivan joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio to talk about this seminal film. Also, we have some listener feedback. And don't forget - it's RONDO SEASON!

Filmmaker and monster kid Joshua Kennedy joins Derek this week to talk about one his favorite movies - 1964's The Gorgon (dir. Terence Fisher). Not only do the two talk about this underrated Hammer classic, Joshua also lets slip who his favorite director is (not that it would be hard to guess!). The Gorgon is such a favorite of Josh's that it inspired his upcoming movie The Night of Medusa (dir. Joshua Kennedy), which will be coming to DVD players near you soon! Also, Derek just found out (courtesy of The Shadow Over Portland) that the Northwest Film Center is showing a White Zombie (dir. Victor Halperin)-The Crime of Dr. Crespi (dir. John H. Auer) double feature this weekend. You know where Derek will be Saturday night! And don't forget - it's RONDO SEASON!

This 1961 European kaiju film leaves quite an impression on the two, and even seems to up the ante when it comes to how to tell a kaiju story. It's not just a British Godzilla! (And, somehow, Tony even manages to make a reference to a 1988 Don Bluth film.) Also, remember it's RONDO SEASON!

It's a light conversation that speaks to what it is about these movies that brings us monster kids together - we just LOVE THEM and love talking with others who love them. Monster Kid Radio #254 - The 2015 Monster Rally Retro Awards & A Word About a Magazine

Every year, Monster Kid Radio retroactively honors the genre cinema of the past with the Monster Rally Retro Awards, or as we like to call them, The Rallies! As most agree that 1931 was the year that started the horror film genre thanks to Universal's iconic monster movie releases, we'll start with 1931, and (thanks to a suggestion from Monster Kid Radio Irregular and writer Stephen D. Sullivan - buy his books!), we'll also honor 1941's and 1951's monster movie makers. Last year, the ballots were submitted, and now it's time for the winners to be announced! Plus, Derek has a few words about a monster magazine.

Way back in Episode #1 of Monster Kid Radio, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan joined Derek to discuss their Top Three Favorite Monster Movies, and this week, on Episode #253, Chris is on the podcast to discuss his Number Two pick - 1951's The Thing from Another World (dir. Christian Nyby). There's a reason why this film made Chris' list, and there's a good chance it may creep up on Derek's Top Three the more he thinks about it! Also, while discussing the film, Derek realizes an odd, tenuous connection he almost had with this film.

Joshua Kennedy is a film student who's been making waves in the retro monster film community, and in this week's episode, he and Derek talk about his background (he was a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award nominee - when he was 15!), his movies, and his favorite Hammer actress. Monster Kid Radio #241 - Island of Lost Souls with Michael Legge (Dr. Dreck)

Are we not monster kids? Michael Legge (aka Dr. Dreck) joins Derek this week to talk about one of the good doctor's favorite horror films. Are we not monster kids? The two of them tackle 1932's Island of Lost Souls (dir. Erle C. Kenton). Are we not monster kids? Along the way, Michael and Derek touch on other cinematic versions of the H. G. Wells' novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, but their focus remains on the first (and best) adaptation of this science fiction classic. (Can you guess who hasn't read the original novel?) Plus, FEEDBACK.

Monster Kid Radio #240 - Strephon Taylor and Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters

The work of Jack Pierce is undeniably one of the cornerstones of what we as monster kids LOVE, and while we here at Monster Kid Radio Headquarters might know a few things about the man, we could certainly stand to learn more. Fortunately filmmaker Strephon Taylor is here to help us with his new documentary Jack Pierce, The Maker of Monsters. This new release from November Fire relates Pierce's early life, his incredible career, and even some of his activities away from the make-up chair. After learning a bit about Stephon's background as a monster kid, and a lot more about Jack Pierce, Derek and Strephon go over their top three favorite Jack Pierce make-up designs. Also, Derek mentions two upcoming Monster Kid Radio Crashes happening in the Portland area!

Monster Kid Radio #239 - The Inner Sanctum Mysteries with Paul McComas

For the first time, Derek recorded an episode of Monster Kid Radio with a REAL LIFE PERSON (he's not related to!) at Monster Kind Radio Headquarters when Paul McComas dropped in during his recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. As one of the biggest fans of Lon Chaney, Jr., ANY of us know, Derek knew Paul was the PERFECT guest to discuss the films Calling Dr. Death (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Weird Woman (dir. Reginald Le Borg), Dead Man's Eyes (dir. Reginald Le Borg), The Frozen Ghost (dir. Harold Young), Strange Confession (dir. John Hoffman), and Pillow of Death (dir. Wallace Fox) - the Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Some of these movies are great. Some . . . leave a bit to be desired. Come along for the Chaney ride with Derek and (Birthday Boy) Paul as they pick apart the films, and take some delightful Lon, Jr., sidetracks along the way. Near the end of the fest, Derek sat down outside the Hollywood Theatre with one and only Brian Callahan to talk about the entire weekend (and, of course, start teasing about what we might all see next year!).
