Creighton Tull Chaney left us July 12, 1973, and he left so many classic films behind for us to remember him by. This week's guest was such a fan of the work of Creighton, aka Lon Chaney, Jr., that he started a fanzine called Lonny Jr....before he was even a teenager! Paul McComas has been affected by Chaney's work throughout his life, and just recently released the short novel Fit for a Frankenstein (co-authored by Greg Starrett) which visits the classic Frankenstein's Monster during a time when it was portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Paul is also a filmmaker, a public speaker, a teacher, and an advocate of RAINN, and has graciously taken some time to chat with us here at Monster Kid Radio. Lon wasn't just in werewolf films - Paul and Derek talk about other films in Chaney's filmography, Paul's favorite film of all time (it's not The Wolf Man), and how his own movie Blood of the Wolfman helped to finally solve Lawrence Talbot's curse while letting Paul pay tribute to a lost friend. Dr. Gangrene, aka Larry Underwood, is a big fan of a movie about a big spider - Tarantula (dir. Jack Arnold) - but, let's be honest. As wonderful as the giant tarantula is, John Agar steals the show. Larry and Derek talk about this Universal classic big bug movie, dip into the plot, talk about the representation of women's roles, and take a science lesson or two. Week Two of Monster Kid Radio's Ray Harryhausen series continues when guest Scott Morris picks Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (dir. Fred F. Sears). Scott Morris is a podcaster (Disney, Indiana & 1951 Down Place) and longtime "star kid," and took some time away form his Disney duties to talk about this Harryhausen classic, his own introduction to the classic science fiction movies, and how he finds a way to feed his stomach and his love of science fiction at the same time at Walt Disney World. (The B-Movie Cast also just covered Earth vs. The Flying Saucers ths past Sunday with former Monster Kid Radio guest Stephen D. Sullivan, so make sure you go check that out, too!) This week marks the passing of one of the best horror hosts around. Not only did he have an impact on Scott, but on countless other star and monster kids. Rest In Peace, Sammy Terry.
