There's a giant lizard on the loose, and Scott Morris is letting Derek know all about it on this week's episodes of Monster Kid Radio when they talk about the 1959 film The Giant Gila Monster (dir. Ray Kellogg). This movie is one of Scott's particular favorites - the cars, the characters, and MAYBE even the music ranks The Giant Gila Monster fairly high on Scott's list of go-to classic monster movies. And it turns out Derek ranks this one pretty high himself! (Also, don't forget to check out last weekend's episode of The Kreepy Kastle to hear Derek as a guest on that podcast!) Derek attended the 2014 World Horror Convention in Portland, Oregon, last weekend. The convention was a horror writer's paradise, and Derek spoke with fellow podcaster Desmond Reddick (from the Dread Media podcast) about his experiences at the convention, and even plays a round of the MKR Classic Five. While most of the panels and content at the WHC were focused on current horror fiction, but Monster Kid Radio listeners would still have found something to do at the convention as one of the special guests was Victoria Price, the daughter of the legendary Vincent Price. Not only did she deliver an amazing presentation about her father (which listeners will hear in Episode #98 of Monster Kid Radio), but she chatted with Derek in the dealer's room as well. At last weekend's Monster Kid Radio Crash, before Derek and the rest of the audience leaned back in their seats for the original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda), two men took the stage to introduce the film. Kyle Yount is the producer and host of the Kaijucast, the world's premier Godzilla-related podcast, and August Ragone has been called the best Japanese fantasy film historian working in English today. (Mr. Ragone's new book Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters: Defending the Earth with Ultraman, Godzilla, and Friends in the Golden Age of Japanese Science Fiction Film was just released, and it looks GORGEOUS!) Kyle and August presented the background of the movie - how it was conceived, its influences, the primary players in the creation of the Godzilla franchise, etc. Also, Derek completes his look at the the recent Sony blu-ray 2-disc Godzilla movie releases - Godzilla vs. Destroyah & Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla: Tokyo S. O. S. & Godzilla: Final Wars. Derek was there, and was joined by MKR regulars Ray Jelinek and Chris McMillan. Chris and Derek previous talked about Godzilla last year on Episodes #27 and #28, but this was a first-time viewing of the film for Ray. Also, Derek takes a look at the recent blu-ray double-disc releases of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah & Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II & Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. (In two days, Derek will tackle the other blu-ray double-disc releases Godzilla vs. Destroyah & Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla: Tokyo S. O. S. & Godzilla: Final Wars.)
