Earlier this year, blogger Vanessa Krystle watched The Creature from the Black Lagoon for the first time. She watched the film "live" with her followers on Twitter, and ultimately didn't have a lot of nice things to say about it. In the very first Monster Kid Radio Monsterkiditorial, Derek responds to her review. A few weeks ago, Joe Blevins (Dead 2 Rights) joined Derek to talk about the careet of Edward D. Wood, Jr., as well as some of the lesser-known Ed Wood films that Monster Kid Radio listeners might enjoy. This wasn't the first time Derek and Joe had appeared on a podcast together, but it was the first time they actually recorded a back-and-forth conversation for a show. Before diving into the "actual" recording session for Episodes 79 and 80, they warmed up with this informal conversation. Monster Kid Radio #081 - Apparently, everyone (including Tom Biegler) thinks Beverly Garland is pretty in The Alligator People
Even though a couple of doctors seem quite taken with Beverly Garland's appearance in The Alligator People (dir. Roy Del Ruth), the film has a lot more going for it than that! Returning guest Tom Biegler joins Derek to talk about this 20th Century Fox film from 1959 that seems to have all the trappings of a Universal monster movie from the early 50s! Lon Chaney, Jr., makes a splash in the film . . . and not just because he's in the swamp with the alligators! Additionally, the Rondo Award nominations were announced this week, and Monster Kid Radio is on the ballot! Finally, Derek makes an announcement at the end of this episode. Outside of the standards (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Bride of the Monster, etc.) or what he saw in the 1994 movie, Derek doesn't know much about Ed Wood . . . but he knows someone who does. Writer Joe Blevins joins Monster Kid Radio to talk about the career of Edward D. Wood, Jr., the path he took to get to Hollywood in the first place, and some of the truly artistic elements of Wood's films. They also look at what the Tim Burton film Ed Wood got right and got wrong. Listen carefully, and you'll hear Joe compare some aspects of a Wood-written film to Tchaikovsky. Filmmaker Dennis Vincent is a man on a mission . . . to make a film inspired by the 1967 "not-so-classic" Night Fright (dir. James A. Sullivan). In this episode of Monster Kid Radio, Dennis and Derek talk about Dennis' upcoming film The Cosmic Creature. The film's leads have been cast. Locations have been scouted. Music has been secured. Dennis is determined to make this movie, and if his enthusiasm doesn't rub off on you, the cosmic creature must have already gotten you! In 1967, Sheriff Clint Crawford (played by John Agar, one of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio) saved a small Texas town from a mutant monster running amok in Night Fright (dir. James A. Sullivan). In 2013, a similar mutant monster will take another crack at the earth, and filmmaker Dennis Vincent aims to tell that tale. This week on Monster Kid Radio, Derek welcomes Dennis to the podcast to talk about his background, his previous work on the documentaries The Witch's Dungeon: 40 Years of Chills and The Aurora Monsters: The Model Craze That Gripped the World, and his upcoming movie inspired by Night Fright called The Cosmic Creature.
