Boris Karloff made quite the impression on writer/actor/musician Randy Bowser . . . so much so, Randy has written Karloff: A One-Person Play, and he's on Monster Kid Radio this week to tell us about it. In this episode, Randy talks with Derek about the process of writing the play, where he found his information and inspiration, and whether or not the Karloff estate is behind the project. Thank you to all the Monster Kid Radio listeners that have backed the Kickstarter campaign to finance this one-of-a-kind piece of stage magic so far! Boris Karloff is not just one of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio. He's not just a guy who played movie monsters. He was a working actor who constantly worked on his craft and gave every project his all, and Randy Bowser's upcoming one-person play Karloff will highlight and feature more than just the monster elements of this man's journey and career. This week on Monster Kid Radio, we meet playwright/actor/musician Randy Bowser, learn about his Monster Kid background, and how Boris Karloff influenced his creative path. You'll believe a turtle can fly . . . and shoot fireballs. Kyle Yount's visit to Monster Kid Radio (or should we say Kaiju Kid Radio?) continues as he and Derek talk about the 1990s trilogy of Gamera films (dir. Shusuke Kaneko). Kyle is the mastermind behind the Kaijucast, and not only is he a fan of all things Godzilla (which he plans on documenting in his upcoming documentary Hail to the King: 60 Years of Destruction), but he's also a fan of that OTHER giant Japanese monster whose name also starts with the letter G. Monster Kid Radio isn't the only monster-themed podcast in the Pacific Northwest. Kyle Yount has been talking about "Godzilla and all of his rubber-suited foes" on the Kaijucast since 2009. Since then, he's been able to do some amazing things, like introducing King Kong vs. Godzilla (dir. IshirÅ Honda) at the Hollywood Theatre in 2012 for that film's 50-year anniversary. (Derek was at that screening, and it began his fandom of all things kaiju proper - thanks Kyle!) Now, Kyle has an opportunity to do something even bigger. Hail to the King: 60 Years of Destruction is a documentary produced by Kyle . . . and the supporters of his Kickstater program. Beverly Washburn's Hollywood history brought her into contact with many legends, and Monster Bash brought her into contact with Monster Kid Radio! Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber set up the interview, and together Joe and Derek ask Beverly about her experience with Mole Men, Captain Kirk, and a really messed up family led by Lon Chaney, Jr. Beverly was a great guest, and we thank her for spending some time with us at Monster Bash. After the interview, Derek opens up the floor for a discussion about a particular piece of news that has the potential to break the internet . . . or at least, a few message boards. Here at Monster Kid Radio, we ask Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson the hard questions about his current day job, his history with MST3k, and what he says about critics that might consider riffing less-than-respectful. Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber set up the interview, and the two of us sat down with the very gracious Joel for this episode of MKR. (And check it out - Joel even played a round of Monster Kid Radio's Classic Five!) Bill Riley, Joe Ziegler, and Jason Crutchley were at Monster Bash this June, but attendees probably know them better as Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, and Scoop Fields - The Ultimate Abbout & Costello Tribute Show! When they weren't performing nightly at the convention, they could be found interacting with the Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein display at the show, or even interacting with people in the hallways! These guys were amazing, and were generous enough with their time to sit down for an interview with Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber in which they talk about their history, how they came together, and their favorite eras and routines of The Boys. Additionally, Derek talks briefly about the soon-to-be-released Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection DVD set (and another Universal box set that might also be worth your time). The Monster Kid Radio/Comic Book Central Crossover begins HERE! At Monster Bash, Derek finally met Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber in person, but they didn't have a lot of time to just catch up. Instead, they ran around the convention, gathering interviews for this EPIC MKR/CBC Monster Bash Crash! To kick things off, Joe and Derek ease into something that's now familiar to them by talking about the next Abbott and Costello monster meet up film in their ongoing series of A&C monster movies - 1953's Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (dir. Charles Lamont). (Next time, Derek and Joe talk briefly about Monster Bash before an interview with the talented men behind The Ultimate Abbott & Costello Tribute Show!) Monster Bash wasn't just celebrities and classic monster movie stars - it was also where attendees could meet film historians and scholars. Derek had an opportunity to sit down with Gregory William Mank (The Very Witching Time of Night: Dark Alleys of Classic Horror Cinema, etc.) and Frank J. Dello Stritto (Vampire Over London: Bela Lugosi in Britain), and in this episode of Monster Kid Radio, he'll share with you the conversations he had with these two authors.
