Monster Kid Radio

This week, David Heath steps out of Dave's Corner of the Universe and onto Monster Kid Radio to join Derek to talk about one of their favorite writers - Robert E. Howard. How is this relevant to Monster Kid Radio? Howard's story "Pigeons from Hell" was adapted for television, directed by John Newland, and was introduced by one of MKR's Patron Saints - Boris Karloff. We have Listener Feedback as well, plus Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

Filmmaker Ansel Faraj and actor Nathan Wilson sit down with Derek to discuss their upcoming movie The Thousand and One Lives of Doctor Mabuse. This is the third time the duo has taken on the Doctor Mabuse character, and they discuss the journey they've taken from the first film (and others) to this most recent cinematic outing. Also, Ansel tells us whether or not they were haunted during the production of 2019's Loon Lake. Listener Feedback, and some announcements (some personal, some specific to Monster Kid Radio) round out the podcast this week.

Trust us. Derek and this week's guest, filmmaker Seb Godin, DO talk about 1971's Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (dir. Seth Holt, Michael Carreras) in this episode of Monster Kid Radio. But they also talk about other Hammer films, ideas for future episodes of Monster Kid Radio, Seb's new movie Blood Rites of the Vampyr and his upcoming movie Abominations of Frankenstein (check out the Kickstarter now!). And no episode would be complete without Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

Up until a few years ago, The Beast from the Beginning of Time (dir. Tom Leahy) was a movie that no one in the podosphere was talking about. You've no idea how long Derek has wanted to talk about Dracula vs. Frankenstein (dir. Al Adamson) on Monster Kid Radio, and, finally, after over 450 episodes, he's making it happen. He's joined by writer Stephen D. Sullivan to talk about the movie, what it means to them, and why it's a lot better than people give it credit for. Steve Turek stops by to go over the latest results in the 2020 Monster Movie Madness tournament, and Kenny has another great look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.

As I've said on the podcast many times, I'm fascinated that so many Monster Kids and fans of classic horror and sci-fi movies end up in creative careers, or at least in creative hobbies. I know so many of you draw, write, craft, produce . . . and sometimes it's not even monster-kid-themed stuff! (And that's okay. No judgment!)

During the Coronapocalypse, a lot of small businesses are taking a hit, and there are a number of suggestions online about how to support these businesses during this time.

I'm sure there are other businesses and makers doing similar things to make sure they'll survive and be around for us all once we come out on the other side of this pandemic. And I want to make sure the Monster Kid Radio audience knows about them.

If you have an online business or have been forced to take your business online or virtual, and it's something you think Monster Kids would like to know about, contact me by email at monsterkidradio@gmail.com. I'd be happy to promote anything relevant through the podcast, or even during the Social Distance Saturday online movie screenings.

Week One of Flashback February begins with a return to a hands-down-no-doubt-about-it-bonafide classic film - Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (dir. Charles Barton). It's been several years since Monster Kid Radio has visited this film, and Disney, Indiana's Scott Morris was up to the task to join Derek for this return. We saw what we saw when we saw it! Or, should we say, we heard what we heard when we heard it! Monster Kid Radio brings in the new year with a new monthly theme - The Satanic Rites of January! This week, Derek is joined by author/game designer/podcaster Kenneth Hite to discuss one of Val Lewton's most affecting films - 1943's The Seventh Victim (dir. Mark Robson). This one gets dark, and we can't think of a better way to start this month's devilish theme. Of course, the good Professor Frenzy has a Bedtime Story for everyone, and Kenny takes a somber look at Famous Monsters of Filmland.
