Monster Kid Radio

There's been a slight change of plans for this episode of Monster Kid Radio, but it involves Lon Chaney, Jr., so it's all right, right? RIGHT? Face of the Screaming Werewolf (dir. Jerry Warren, Gilberto Martínez Solares, Rafael Portillo) was playing at the Joy Cinema, and there was no way Derek was going to miss this particular Weird Wednesday! Derek introduced the film, and Scott Morris and David Heath (and a few other audience members) joined him after the movie to discuss the glorious assemblage of sounds and images they just watched.

And keep listening - near the end of this special episode, Derek tells you what you can expect for the rest of Dancember.

Dancember continues on Monster Kid Radio, and we're howling about Scream of the Wolf (dir. Dan Curtis) with Larry Underwood. Who's Larry Underwood? You might know him as the horror host Dr. Gangrene, and he's one of Monster Kid Radio's oldest friends. Also, this week Jeff checks in with another Weird Wednesday Report from the Joy Cinema, and Kenny hits us with another look at Famous Monsters of Filmland. Several previous guests of Monster Kid Radio drop by to share their favorite MKR memories, Derek looks at the previous 400 episodes and looks forward to the future, and Brenda puts up with him!

Dan Curtis). Also, Kenny shows us how Famous Monsters of Filmland covered this fantastic film. Jeff Polier is back with another Weird Wednesday Report about the film Night of the Bloody Apes (dir. Dancember begins on Monster Kid Radio,  and our month-long look at the works of Dan Curtis starts with a great film! This week, Stephen D. Sullivan joins the show to consider how well Jack Palance filled the fangs and cape in 1974's Bram Stoker's Dan Curtis' Dracula (dir. Dan Curtis). Kenny also takes us through several issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland to show us how the magazine covered the film. (Derek had a hard time reading a calendar in this episode. During post-production, he realized that the final episode of the year will be Episode #401, not #400. Oops!)

Earlier this year, Monster Kid Radio asked you to participate in a poll and tell us what your favorite Frankenstein films are, as well as what you consider to be the "best" Frankenstein films. This week on the podcast, Steve Turek joins Derek to go over the results of that poll. Some of our favorites made the cut, and some selections surprised us. Also, Ken joins the Frankenstein fun with his Famous Monsters of Filmland segment, and Brenda (and Wednesday) help with the Listener Feedback.

When thinking about Dracula films, it's hard not to think about Horror of Dracula (dir. Terence Fisher), the Hammer Films Production that showed the world that Bela Lugosi wasn't the only man fit to wear the count's cape. Last month, Derek had the opportunity to see this film on the big screen, and he wanted to keep those Dracula-dreams going so he invited Steven Lee (no relation to Christopher) to Monster Kid Radio to discuss it. Ken tells us how Horror of Dracula was represented in Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, and to round the show out, Brenda helps with Listener Feedback.

How much Lugosi is needed for a movie to be considered a Lugosi film? Find out in this episode. Kenny's Famous Monsters of Filmland segment tells us how Lugosi was represented in the famous magazine, and the editor of that magazine - Forrest J Ackerman - appeared in the movie Derek saw at the Joy Cinema on Weird Wednesday. He and Jeff Polier saw and talk about the 1971 classic Dracula vs. Frankenstein (dir. Al Adamson).

Put on your diving suit and get start the miniaturization process because this week on Monster Kid Radio, Scott Morris joins Derek to discuss the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage (dir. Richard Fleischer). Ken Blose's Famous Monsters of Filmland segment tells us how Fantastic Voyage was represented in the magazine, and Jeff Polier's Weird Wednesday report tells us what he thought of a recent offering at the Joy Cinema.

Also, even though Halloween 2018 is behind us, Derek and Karen keep the Halloween spirit alive by talking about her novel The Jack-o-Lantern Box. Have you seen The Vampire Bat (dir. Frank R. Strayer)? If not, Paul Curtis may convince you to put it right at the top of your To Watch list! And if you have, you already know what Derek knows - it's a solid film! This week, Paul and Derek break down what could very well be considered an unofficial Universal horror film (and you'll need to listen to their conversation to understand why we're calling it that!). And to round out our coverage of The Vampire Bat, Ken Blose tells us how the film was originally presented and covered in Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. All this, plus Listener Feedback with Brenda! Let's do this!

Kick back with Derek and his wife Brenda as they catch up with the show and Listener Feedback. This is a low-key episode, a little out-of-the-norm, but there's a good reason for that. Don't despair - there IS Monster Kid content here! Plus, Derek makes an announcement about Halloween 2018.

Edgar August Poe continues when fellow podcaster and Barbara Steele fan Rod Barnett joins Derek to discuss a film kinda-sorta based on an Edgar Allan Poe "story" - 1964's Castle of Blood (dir. Sergio Corbucci, Antonio Margheriti). Antonio Margheriti is one of Rod's favorite filmmakers, and he brings his own podcast-tested enthusiasm to Monster Kid Radio. (That enthusiasm spills all over this episode as Derek and Rod end up talking about a lot more than Castle of Blood!) Plus, Jeff Polier's Weird Wednesday Report!

Edgar August Poe kicks off with a film featuring one of the icons of classic horror - Dwight Frye - as well as a director who would probably never be caught dead, or undead, directing a monster movie but he did act in this one - Erich von Stroheim. It's 1935's The Crime of Dr. Crespi (dir. John H. Auer), and Derek has Michael Legge (aka Dr. Dreck) to thank for bringing this fun kinda-sorta-Poe-adaptation(?) into his life. It's been a hot summer, and Derek is already looking forward to the cooler weather coming later this year. To help get into that cooler-weather-mood, Monster Kid Radio is celebrating Christmas in July with 1934's March of the Wooden Soldiers (dir. Gus Meins, Charley Rogers). Also known as Babes in Toyland, this Laurel & Hardy vehicle actually takes place in the month of July AND it does have monsters (technically), so when Steve Turek joins Derek to tackle this movie this week, it (technically) fits into the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse (technically). Also, Jeff Polier has another Weird Wednesday Report, and Brenda reads the newest Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles.

Call it Los campeones justicieros. Call it The Champions of Justice. Whatever you call Federico Curiel's film, just make sure you call it a fun time, because that's what you'll hear in this week's episode of Monster Kid Radio. Author Frank Schildiner returns to the show to kick off 2018's Lucha de Mayo as he and Derek talk about this idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more, to see if they could work together when we needed them to to fight the battles we never could. In this case, we need an assembled force of luchadors to fight the evil Dr. Marius Zarkoff in this 1971 film obviously set in a shared cinematic universe. Along the way, Derek (gently) picks Frank's brain about how he researches the period-specific details for his books, they play the Classic Five, and for some reason, 1979's The Frisco Kid (dir. Robert Aldrich) comes up. Also, we have another installment of Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles, and listener feedback with Brenda.

For the past several weeks, Derek's been talking about the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards here on Monster Kid Radio, and this week, he's joined by the man that started it all - David Colton. David took some time out of his Monsterpalooza weekend to talk about the history of the Rondo Awards, what it's like to award them, how the ballot has evolved over the years, and much more . . . after they play around of the Classic Five, of course! Also, Monster Kid Radio's 200 Years of Frankenstein continues as Derek discovers a short French film from 1952 featuring the Frankenstei . . . er . . . Frankensberg monster. Michael Dodd's Vault of Monster Collectibles makes its debut on the show, and Brenda rounds out the show by reading your emails.

It's an abbreviated show this week, but it's not how long the podcast is that matters - it's how you use it. We've got a bit of a looser episode of Monster Kid Radio this week. Bride of Frankenstein (dir. James Whale) played at the Kiggins Theatre (Vancouver, WA) earlier this month, and Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland (http://shadowoverportland.blogspot.com/) joined Derek for the film. Last weekend, Portland's NW Film Center showed the original King Kong (dir. Merian C. Cooper, Ernest B. Schoedsack) and Vampyr (dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer), and Chris was along for the ride again. And as an added bonus, Dominique Lamssies helped guide Derek through his first-time viewing of the 1932 vampire film. Dominique also provides a reading of her short story "Bad Ritual." We play the Classic Five. We talk about how we fell in love with the more obscure (dare we say, forgotten?) horror movies. And we also run through our Top Three Favorite Forgotten Horror Movies. In mid-2017, author Stephen D. Sullivan joined Derek for a conversation about an underrated and under-served Karloff-Lee-Steele film. This is that recording. But not only do you get a conversation between Steve and Derek about 1968's Curse of the Crimson Altar (dir. Vernon Sewell), you'll get some insight about the kinds of movies they truly love watching, what kinds of expectations they bring to the table when they watch a classic (or not-so-classic) film, and what mid-80s slasher movie made a HUGE impact on Derek back in the day. Also, Derek talks a bit about Patreon, we have listener Feedback, and the Year of Frankenstein begins here on Episode #351 of Monster Kid Radio. And what's this about YouTube?
