Effects artist Joseph Schultz joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio ostensibly to discuss the 1955 film Day the World Ended (dir. Roger Corman). And they do . . . but they also discuss practical effects vs. CGI effects, his being a monster kid father, and the upcoming Carl Denham's Giant Monster. The two of them have a lot to talk about (and they didn't even really touch too much on the Backstreet Boys!), but they do make time for a round of the Classic Five. Monster Kid Radio #349 - The Gorgon with Joshua Kennedy and Stephen D. Sullivan PLUS Veronica Carlson
Lots to get to this week, so hang on tight! Derek takes you back to this past summer's Monster Bash for two interviews - one with legendary actress Veronica Carlson, and one with filmmaker Joshua Kennedy about the Monster Bash premiere of his latest movie Theseus and the Minotaur. Joshua doesn't know how to take a break - since this recording, he produced an adaptation of Frankenstein for the stage and then began pre-production on his most ambitious production to date - The House of the Gorgon. We'll hear about this new movie and then we'll talk about an older movie - The Reptile (dir. John Gilling) - with old friend Stephen D. Sullivan. Monster Kid Radio #348 - The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism with Troy Howarth AND Weird Wednesday's Terror Beneath the Sea
Troy Howarth returns to the podcast this week, and takes Derek on a trip to The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (dir. Harald Reinl). If the movie's title doesn't pique your interest, maybe one of the film's stars will. Christopher Lee is in the cast! Also, this past Wednesday night, Derek went to Weird Wednesday at the Joy Cinema for a screening of Terror Beneath the Sea (dir. Hajime Sato), and pointed his recorder at Jeff Polier and Dominique Lamssies for their thoughts on the film. Monster Kid Radio #347 - Caltiki, The Immortal Monster with Chris McMillan AND The Monster Kid Chronicles by Timothy Price
Last week, the Monster Kid Radio 2017 Holiday Gift Guide was revealed, and one of the items on the gift guide was the movie Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (dir. Mario Bava, Riccardo Freda). It made the guide because The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan recommended it, so it only seemed fair to have him on the show this week to talk about the movie itself. We also hear a bit about his experience at a recent screening of Suspiria (dir. Dario Argento), and there's a VERY slight tease about something else Chris and Derek have up their sleeve for the podcast. (Very slight. VERY slight.) Also, Derek has an announcement to make about . . . something Strange-ly cool. Also this week, we have the very first episode of The Monster Kid Chronicles by Timothy Price, and we can't wait for you to hear it! 1973's The Creeping Flesh (dir. Freddie Francis) is on deck this week, as is Dan Day, Jr., the man behind The Hitless Wonder Movie Blog. Dan is a huge fan of this film, and while he and Derek did get a chance to talk about it briefly at this past summer's Monster Bash, they saved the really good conversation for this episode of Monster Kid Radio. Along the way, they also talk about Veronica Carlson, independent filmmaker and mutual friend Joshua Kennedy, and of course they play the Classic Five. (And for the record, Derek isn't the first person to mention this week's movie as being Lovecraftian . . . for once!) There's another new voice this week on Monster Kid Radio this week when Bloody Good Horror's Andrew Roebuck joins Derek to talk about everybody's favorite giant turtle. But which version of the original Gamera do they tackle? BOTH OF THEM! Gamera: The Giant Monster (dir. Noriaki Yuasa) and Gammera the Invincible (dir. Sandy Howard, Noriaki Yuasa) are decidedly different films . . . or are they? Listen to this episode to find out. Also, Jeff Polier calls in his thoughts on last October's Scare-A-Thon at the Joy Cinema, and Dwight Kemper has a few impressions for you. Author Micah S. Harris joins Monster Kid Radio this week, and he's bringing The Woman Eater (dir. Charles Saunders) with him. This 1958 film is the main topic of conversation, but that's not all Micah and Derek talk about this week on the podcast. We'll learn a bit about Micah's background as a monster kid and writer, what interesting . . . creature . . . he had for a pet as a kid, and, of course, he plays a round of the Classic Five. Also this week, Derek has just a few words to say about the status of Universal's Dark Universe, as well as a few audio offerings that may or may not scratch your monster kid audio itch. Scott may be one of the founders of Disney, Indiana, but don't let those mouse ears fool you. He's a classic sci-fi fan through-and-through . . . although before prepping for this recording, he'd never seen 1979's Alien (dir. Ridley Scott). He and Derek talk about It! Monster Kid Radio #338 - Tripping through the Mihmiverse with Steven Turek, plus Demon with the Atomic Brain thoughts
By the time you hear this episode, the latest Christopher R. Mihm film Demon with the Atomic Brain has had its world premiere, and to celebrate the 12th film (in 12 years!) of the Mihmiverse, Derek is joined by Mihmiverse super fan Steven Turek to journey through the movies. Derek met MKR listener Steven at Monster Bash, so they catch up for a moment before diving into their discussion. Afterward, we'll hear from three Monster Kid Radio regulars - Rich Chamberlain, Jeff Owens, and Stephen D. At Monster Bash, author Frank Dello Stritto took us all to ghoul school on the 1943 film The Return of the Vampire (dir. Lew Landers) and its place in Dracula-movie-dom. It was a fantastic presentation, and Frank was kind enough to spend some time with Derek between events at the Bash to make a private recording of his talk. Do you know who hadn't seen The Return of the Vampire before the Bash? It's time for a check up with the good Dr. Gangrene (aka Larry Underwood) when he joins Monster Kid Radio this week to take a look at the 1981 anthology film The Monster Club (dir. Roy Ward Baker). For years, Larry has been torturing Derek with the music from this film, but Derek really shouldn't complain. A mad scientist like Dr. Gangrene is SUPPOSED to torture people, right? Besides, how tortuous can a movie REALLY be if it features Vincent Price and John Carradine? Scott Morris is a podcast legend*. He's been podcasting for over nine years at Disney, Indiana. He was a regular contributor to Derek's previous podcasting venture. He's contributed to numerous podcasts over the years. And from 2011 to 2016, he was one of the co-producers of 1951 Down Place, where he, Derek, and Casey Criswell examined a movie from the classic Hammer Films catalog once a month. Scott joins Derek this week to discuss what happened to 1951 Down Place, what the future holds for this podcast, and why it might have something to do with what's happening with all-things Monster Kid Radio moving forward! Tim Durbin (Viewing the Classics and Classics on the Tube) joins Derek on Monster Kid Radio to discuss the 1932 dark adventure film The Most Dangerous Game (dir. Irving Pichel, Ernest B. Schoedsack). Derek actually didn't know if this movie would fit in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, but by the time he and Tim are done talking about it, we think you'll agree it's required Monster Kid viewing! Also, we can't NOT talk about Universal's attempt to launch a new cinematic world of gods and monsters with 2017's The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Derek and his wife saw it, and was joined by Tom Daufel for a quick discussion about the movie. Also, The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan has a few things to say about the film, as does author Stephen D. Sullivan. All this, plus listener voicemails and even a contest is waiting for you in this week's epic-sized episode of Monster Kid Radio! Monster Kid Radio Episode #322 - The B-Movie Cookbook with Nic Brown & Fiona Young-Brown, plus more chatting about Dark Universe
Familiar voices and maybe not-so-familiar voices join Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio. First, Fiona Young-Brown (https://www.fionayoungbrown.com/) and Nic Brown (http://www.bmovieman.com/) stop by to talk about their upcoming book The B-Movie Cookbook! This book is set to release soon (and you can still pre-order your copy now!), and after talking with this real-life writing power couple about it, Derek feels like he needs a snack! There's no time for snacking, though, because there's still that upcoming mummy movie to talk about. For the final time BEFORE its release, Stephen D. Sullivan (author of Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors and a number of other awesome monster-kid-friendly books) talks with Derek (again!) about The Mummy (dir. Alex Kurtzman). Clearly, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is copying Monster Kid Radio . . . right? Okay, not really. But it IS a happy (?) accident that MST3k covered The Beast of Hollow Mountain (dir. Monster kid Greg Starrett returns to Monster Kid Radio this week to join Derek for a conversation about the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs (dir. Paul Leni). They both saw the movie thanks to the television channel Comet, and you'll get to hear whether or not it was worth the space it took on their DVRs! Somehow, the conversation turned into a commercial for two of our favorite independent retro filmmakers - Christopher R. Mihm and Joshua Kennedy! Before wrapping up this week's episode, Derek reflects on the Ultraman double feature he recently attended at the Hollywood Theatre. Recent film school graduate Joshua Kennedy returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about his most recent film - The Alpha Omega Man - and the next project in the works - Theseus and the Minotaur. Of course, a couple of monster kids can't get together to talk shop without several tangents turning up in the conversation, so everything from Star Wars to the Universal monster universe comes up as well! Also, Derek hears from a listener over 9000 miles away from Monster Kid Radio Central. Voicemail: 503-479-5MKR (503-479-5657) Theseus and the Minotaur - Coming Soon from Joshua Kennedy! The Monster Movie Kid himself, Rich Chamberlain, joins Derek this week on Monster Kid Radio for a chat about 1962's Carnival of Souls (dir. Herk Harvey). They get a LITTLE spoiler-y, so you've been warned! There's also some feedback, and some other chatter about other monster kid friendly topics. Let's start the New Year with a new voice on Monster Kid Radio! This week, Derek is joined by author, Rondo award winner, and monster kid David Schecter. David is the mastermind behind Monstrous Movie Music, a label responsible for making all monster kid ears smile with soundtrack releases for some of the best 1950s monster movies around. David is also a writer, a DVD commentarian (is that a word?), and a friend of Julie Adams', so we HAD to have him on the show! Also, we'll find out about an upcoming Monster Kid Radio Crash.
