Son of Ghostman was screened at Monster Bash, and ever since Larry "Dr. Gangrene" Underwood put the movie on the 2013 Monster Kid Radio Holiday Gift Guide, Derek has been eager to watch it. Derek attended the 2014 World Horror Convention in Portland, Oregon, last weekend. The convention was a horror writer's paradise, and Derek spoke with fellow podcaster Desmond Reddick (from the Dread Media podcast) about his experiences at the convention, and even plays a round of the MKR Classic Five. While most of the panels and content at the WHC were focused on current horror fiction, but Monster Kid Radio listeners would still have found something to do at the convention as one of the special guests was Victoria Price, the daughter of the legendary Vincent Price. At last weekend's Monster Kid Radio Crash, before Derek and the rest of the audience leaned back in their seats for the original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda), two men took the stage to introduce the film. Kyle Yount is the producer and host of the Kaijucast, the world's premier Godzilla-related podcast, and August Ragone has been called the best Japanese fantasy film historian working in English today. The original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda) is in the middle of a limited theatrical run, and Monster Kid Radio crashed a screening at Portland's Hollywood Theatre. Derek was there, and was joined by MKR regulars Ray Jelinek and Chris McMillan. Chris and Derek previous talked about Godzilla last year on Episodes #27 and #28, but this was a first-time viewing of the film for Ray. Last weekend was the 2014 H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon, and Monster Kid Radio was there! For three days, Lovecraft fans took over Portland's Hollywood Theatre for feature films, short movies, author readings and signings, panel discussions, madness-inducing parties...so basically just a really good time! Derek was a small part of the show this year as he was asked to introduce the 1968 film Curse of the Crimson Altar (dir. Vernon Sewell), as well as participate in one of the panels. Between events, Derek caught up with old and new friends, and in this episode of Monster Kid Radio, you'll hear some of those conversations. First, Derek spoke with author David Agranoff about his recent books (Boot Boys of the Wolf Reich, Hunting the Moon Tribe) and where you might find a horror host or monster influence in them. The final installment of the 2014 Cinescopio film series happened March 20, 2014, and Derek was there. The movie? Santo and Blue Demon Against the Monsters (dir. Gilberto Martínez Solares). The latest Monster Kid Radio Crash happened last week at the Hollywood Theatre, and not even invading martians could keep us away! Derek was joined by Ray Jelinek, Chris McMillan (The Shadow Over Portland), Tom Daufel, and Rick Myers (The Recovering Ubergeek), and they watched Santo el Enmascarado de Plata vs 'La invasión de los marcianos' (dir. Alfredo B. Crevenna), aka Santo vs. the Martian Invasion. But that wasn't all! As part of the Cinescopio film series, the gang was able to watch the short documentary Viva Lucha Libre (dir. Last month, Scott and Tracey Morris left Disney, Indiana for a monster-filled weekend at the Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, Indiana. The event? Monster Mania. The movies? Last month, Scott and Tracey Morris (the high high-muckety-mucks of Disney, Indiana and returning guests to Monster Kid Radio) went to the Artcraft Theater's Monster Mania event in Franklin, Indiana. The 2-day event featured 35mm print screenings of six classic Universal monster films, and most of these films were first time viewings for Scott and Tracey. What Disney film did Derek's fifth grade teacher show him . . . that TERRIFIED him? After getting scared by Mickey Mouse (for real!), Derek heads to Portland's Hollywood Theatre for a screening of 1974's The 7 Brothers Meet Dracula (dir. Roy Ward Baker, Cheh Chang). According to a recent Monster Kid Radio Facebook Group poll, the listeners wanted to hear Derek go over his list Top Three Vincent Price Movies list, but Derek didn't want to do it alone. Author and horror host Larry Underwood (Dr. Gangrene) returns to the show to join Derek and talk about Vincent Price's career and his interests apart from being the lovable boogeyman he's known as to all us monster kids. In mid-July, Rolling Stone published on their website the article "Best Monster Movies of All Time" by Alexis Murphy and Julian Ring. As the publisher of the 24-issue fanzine Lonny Jr., Paul McComas started writing about monsters before he was even a teenager, and he's still writing about them now. He co-wrote (with Greg Starrett) the short novel Fit for a Frankenstein as a tribute to all things Universal monsters with a particularly fond look at Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Ygor and the Frankenstein Monster as portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Paul and Derek talk about the genesis of this book as well as another role Lon Chaney, Jr., undertook - the Son of Dracula in the film of the same name (dir. Creighton Tull Chaney left us July 12, 1973, and he left so many classic films behind for us to remember him by. This week's guest was such a fan of the work of Creighton, aka Lon Chaney, Jr., that he started a fanzine called Lonny Jr....before he was even a teenager! Paul McComas has been affected by Chaney's work throughout his life, and just recently released the short novel Fit for a Frankenstein (co-authored by Greg Starrett) which visits the classic Frankenstein's Monster during a time when it was portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Paul is also a filmmaker, a public speaker, a teacher, and an advocate of RAINN, and has graciously taken some time to chat with us here at Monster Kid Radio. Lon wasn't just in werewolf films - Paul and Derek talk about other films in Chaney's filmography, Paul's favorite film of all time (it's not The Wolf Man), and how his own movie Blood of the Wolfman helped to finally solve Lawrence Talbot's curse while letting Paul pay tribute to a lost friend.
