Monster Kid Radio #116 - Beverly Washburn at Monster Bash

Beverly Washburn's Hollywood history brought her into contact with many legends, and Monster Bash brought her into contact with Monster Kid Radio! Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber set up the interview, and together Joe and Derek ask Beverly about her experience with Mole Men, Captain Kirk, and a really messed up family led by Lon Chaney, Jr. Beverly was a great guest, and we thank her for spending some time with us at Monster Bash. After the interview, Derek opens up the floor for a discussion about a particular piece of news that has the potential to break the internet . . . or at least, a few message boards.

Monster Kid Radio #115 - Joel Hodgson at Monster Bash

Here at Monster Kid Radio, we ask Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson the hard questions about his current day job, his history with MST3k, and what he says about critics that might consider riffing less-than-respectful. Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber set up the interview, and the two of us sat down with the very gracious Joel for this episode of MKR. (And check it out - Joel even played a round of Monster Kid Radio's Classic Five!)

Monster Kid Radio #114 - The Ultimate Abbott and Costello Tribute Show at Monster Bash

Bill Riley, Joe Ziegler, and Jason Crutchley were at Monster Bash this June, but attendees probably know them better as Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, and Scoop Fields - The Ultimate Abbout & Costello Tribute Show! When they weren't performing nightly at the convention, they could be found interacting with the Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein display at the show, or even interacting with people in the hallways! These guys were amazing, and were generous enough with their time to sit down for an interview with Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber in which they talk about their history, how they came together, and their favorite eras and routines of The Boys. Additionally, Derek talks briefly about the soon-to-be-released Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection DVD set (and another Universal box set that might also be worth your time).

Monster Kid Radio #113 - Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Joe Stuber

The Monster Kid Radio/Comic Book Central Crossover begins HERE! At Monster Bash, Derek finally met Comic Book Central's Joe Stuber in person, but they didn't have a lot of time to just catch up. Instead, they ran around the convention, gathering interviews for this EPIC MKR/CBC Monster Bash Crash! To kick things off, Joe and Derek ease into something that's now familiar to them by talking about the next Abbott and Costello monster meet up film in their ongoing series of A&C monster movies - 1953's Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (dir. Charles Lamont).

(Next time, Derek and Joe talk briefly about Monster Bash before an interview with the talented men behind The Ultimate Abbott & Costello Tribute Show!)

Monster Kid Radio #112 - Gregory William Mank - Frank J. Dello Stritto

Monster Bash wasn't just celebrities and classic monster movie stars - it was also where attendees could meet film historians and scholars. Derek had an opportunity to sit down with Gregory William Mank (The Very Witching Time of Night: Dark Alleys of Classic Horror Cinema, etc.) and Frank J. Dello Stritto (Vampire Over London: Bela Lugosi in Britain), and in this episode of Monster Kid Radio, he'll share with you the conversations he had with these two authors.

Monster Kid Radio #111 - Son of Ghostman's Kurt Larson - Midnight Syndicate's Edward Douglas

Son of Ghostman was screened at Monster Bash, and ever since Larry "Dr. Gangrene" Underwood put the movie on the 2013 Monster Kid Radio Holiday Gift Guide, Derek has been eager to watch it. Not only did he watch it (and enjoy it!), he had a chance to speak with the film's director, Kurt Larson. And speaking of the 2013 Gift Guide, Derek also caught up with Edward Douglas of Midnight Syndicate. Midnight Syndicate's latest album release Monsters of Legend has been in heavy rotation in Derek's iPod, and listeners will get to hear some of this highly-recommended music on this episode of Monster Kid Radio.

Also, when Derek isn't talking about the overall Monster Bash experience with Scott and Tracey Morris, he's sitting down to talk with filmmaker Christopher R. Mihm about his latest release (The Late Night Double Feature) and his upcoming film (Danny Johnson Saves the World) before playing a round of the Classic Five.

Frequent Monster Kid Radio guests Scott Morris and Tracey Morris were also at the Bash, so the three of them talk about their first day at the convention. (They also play the Classic Five!) Additionally, Derek chats with Arch Hall, Jr. about his work in films like Eegah, Wild Guitar, and The Sadist, as well as his upcoming film Lamb Feed (dir. Michael S. Rodriguez). Monster Kid Radio #106 - Chekov's Invisibility Serum: Joe Stuber and Abbot and Costello Meet the Invisible Man

1951's Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man (dir. Charles Lamont) ends with a boxing match, and Joe Stuber is there to cover the in-ring action on Monster Kid Radio. This is the third Abbott and Costello Meet... film covered on MKR so far, and Derek views this one almost as highly as the film in which the boys meet Frankenstein. Joe and Derek further discuss the tropes, the cleverness, and the genius of Bud and Lou. Plus, there's Listener Feedback, the upcoming Monster Kid Radio Crash, and, of course, Monster Bash.

The convention was a horror writer's paradise, and Derek spoke with fellow podcaster Desmond Reddick (from the Dread Media podcast) about his experiences at the convention, and even plays a round of the MKR Classic Five. While most of the panels and content at the WHC were focused on current horror fiction, but Monster Kid Radio listeners would still have found something to do at the convention as one of the special guests was Victoria Price, the daughter of the legendary Vincent Price. Not only did she deliver an amazing presentation about her father (which listeners will hear in Episode #98 of Monster Kid Radio), but she chatted with Derek in the dealer's room as well.

Monster Kid Radio #096 - Godzilla introduced by Kyle Yount and August Ragone

At last weekend's Monster Kid Radio Crash, before Derek and the rest of the audience leaned back in their seats for the original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda), two men took the stage to introduce the film. Kyle Yount is the producer and host of the Kaijucast, the world's premier Godzilla-related podcast, and August Ragone has been called the best Japanese fantasy film historian working in English today. (Mr. Ragone's new book Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters: Defending the Earth with Ultraman, Godzilla, and Friends in the Golden Age of Japanese Science Fiction Film was just released, and it looks GORGEOUS!) Kyle and August presented the background of the movie - how it was conceived, its influences, the primary players in the creation of the Godzilla franchise, etc. Also, Derek completes his look at the the recent Sony blu-ray 2-disc Godzilla movie releases - Godzilla vs. Destroyah & Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla: Tokyo S. O. S. & Godzilla: Final Wars.

Monster Kid Radio #095 - Monster Kid Radio Crashes Godzilla

The original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda) is in the middle of a limited theatrical run, and Monster Kid Radio crashed a screening at Portland's Hollywood Theatre. Derek was there, and was joined by MKR regulars Ray Jelinek and Chris McMillan. Chris and Derek previous talked about Godzilla last year on Episodes #27 and #28, but this was a first-time viewing of the film for Ray. Also, Derek takes a look at the recent blu-ray double-disc releases of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah & Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II & Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. (In two days, Derek will tackle the other blu-ray double-disc releases Godzilla vs. Destroyah & Godzilla vs. Megaguirus and Godzilla: Tokyo S. O. S. & Godzilla: Final Wars.)

Monster Kid Radio #094 - Thunder Fist Punching Infra-Man with Ray Jelinek

Ray Jelinek continues his Infra-Man stint on Monster Kid Radio as he and Derek thunder fist punch their way into the nitty gritty of this 1975 Shan Hua-directed film. Ray's life was changed the day he saw this film as a child, and Derek wishes he had that same formative experience. In addition to Derek and Ray wrapping up their discussion of Infra-Man, Derek learns about Ray's childhood horror host.

Monster Kid Radio #093 - A super-fun time with Ray Jelinek and Infra-Man!

When Derek first started talking with his friends about about launching Monster Kid Radio, Ray Jelinek started talking about a movie he remembered seeing when he was a kid. That movie was 1975's Infra-Man (dir. Shan Hua), and while it wasn't a movie that would normally find a home in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, Ray's enthusiasm and outright glee when talking about this movie makes Infra-Man something we DEFINITELY need to talk about on the podcast.

Monster Kid Radio #089 - Report from the 2014 H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon

Last weekend was the 2014 H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon, and Monster Kid Radio was there! For three days, Lovecraft fans took over Portland's Hollywood Theatre for feature films, short movies, author readings and signings, panel discussions, madness-inducing parties...so basically just a really good time! Derek was a small part of the show this year as he was asked to introduce the 1968 film Curse of the Crimson Altar (dir. Vernon Sewell), as well as participate in one of the panels. Between events, Derek caught up with old and new friends, and in this episode of Monster Kid Radio, you'll hear some of those conversations. First, Derek spoke with author David Agranoff about his recent books (Boot Boys of the Wolf Reich, Hunting the Moon Tribe) and where you might find a horror host or monster influence in them. Then, Derek spoke two composers whose work has had a home on his iPod for years - Troy Sterling Nies and Reber Clark. They're two of the four composers behind the excellent album Out of the Aeons: Music for a New Dark Age. Finally, Derek checks in with Monster Kid Radio regulars Ray Jelinek and Chris McMillan for their thoughts on this year's festival.

Kaiju 101's Andy Camble continues his visit on Monster Kid Radio as he and Derek continue to talk about The Deadly Mantis (dir. Nathan Juran). Andy's own podcast looks at the science of the great kaiju films, so in this episode, Derek asks him how realistic the science of The Deadly Mantis is. They also talk about the ending of the film, further talk about the models used in the movie, those beloved Crestwood House Monster books, and what Andy has in store for future episodes of Kaiju 101.

Also, the winner of the Tom Biegler The Alligator People original sculpt is announced.

Monster Kid Radio #087 - Andy Camble vs. The Deadly Mantis

This week's guest host is no stranger to giant monsters. Andy Camble is the producer of the always excellent Kaiju 101 podcast, and he's joining Monster Kid Radio to talk about a non-rubber-suited monster - The Deadly Mantis (dir. Nathan Juran). How does this film compare to other big bug movies of the time? Do birds really have a skeletal system? And what is Newton's Third Law?

Also, Ray Jelinek tells Derek why he's attending the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival this year. (Apparently he survived last year's event!)

Monster Kid Radio #085 - MKR Crashes Santo and Blue Demon Against the Monsters

The final installment of the 2014 Cinescopio film series happened March 20, 2014, and Derek was there. The movie? Santo and Blue Demon Against the Monsters (dir. Gilberto Martínez Solares). The event? A Monster Kid Radio Crash. Derek was joined by MKR listeners/crashers Tom Daufel, Ray Jelinek, and Chris McMillan for a night of masked wrestling, monsters, Santo, Blue Demon, a creepy little monster dude that scared Derek more than any other monster in the film, a fashion show, a panel (featuring Mega Boy and Ideal Mexican, moderated by John Cárdenas) . . . and plenty of laughs. This was an amazing night, and Derek had his recorder on hand to share the evening with the Monster Kid Radio listeners who couldn't make the show.

This wasn't the first time Derek and Joe had appeared on a podcast together, but it was the first time they actually recorded a back-and-forth conversation for a show. Monster Kid Radio #081 - Apparently, everyone (including Tom Biegler) thinks Beverly Garland is pretty in The Alligator People

Even though a couple of doctors seem quite taken with Beverly Garland's appearance in The Alligator People (dir. Roy Del Ruth), the film has a lot more going for it than that! Returning guest Tom Biegler joins Derek to talk about this 20th Century Fox film from 1959 that seems to have all the trappings of a Universal monster movie from the early 50s! Lon Chaney, Jr., makes a splash in the film . . . and not just because he's in the swamp with the alligators! Additionally, the Rondo Award nominations were announced this week, and Monster Kid Radio is on the ballot! Finally, Derek makes an announcement at the end of this episode.

Monster Kid Radio #079 - The career and films of Edward D. Wood, Jr., with Joe Blevins

Outside of the standards (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Bride of the Monster, etc.) or what he saw in the 1994 movie, Derek doesn't know much about Ed Wood . . . but he knows someone who does. Writer Joe Blevins joins Monster Kid Radio to talk about the career of Edward D. Wood, Jr., the path he took to get to Hollywood in the first place, and some of the truly artistic elements of Wood's films. They also look at what the Tim Burton film Ed Wood got right and got wrong. Listen carefully, and you'll hear Joe compare some aspects of a Wood-written film to Tchaikovsky.

Monster Kid Radio #078 - The Cosmic Creature is coming! Are you ready?

Filmmaker Dennis Vincent is a man on a mission . . . to make a film inspired by the 1967 "not-so-classic" Night Fright (dir. James A. Sullivan). In this episode of Monster Kid Radio, Dennis and Derek talk about Dennis' upcoming film The Cosmic Creature. The film's leads have been cast. Locations have been scouted. Music has been secured. Monster Kid Radio #077 - Meet monster kid filmmaker Dennis Vincent!

In 1967, Sheriff Clint Crawford (played by John Agar, one of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio) saved a small Texas town from a mutant monster running amok in Night Fright (dir. James A. Sullivan). In 2013, a similar mutant monster will take another crack at the earth, and filmmaker Dennis Vincent aims to tell that tale. This week on Monster Kid Radio, Derek welcomes Dennis to the podcast to talk about his background, his previous work on the documentaries The Witch's Dungeon: 40 Years of Chills and The Aurora Monsters: The Model Craze That Gripped the World, and his upcoming movie inspired by Night Fright called The Cosmic Creature.

Monster Kid Radio #076 - Watch Out! Monster Kid Radio Crashes Santo vs. the Martian Invasion

The latest Monster Kid Radio Crash happened last week at the Hollywood Theatre, and not even invading martians could keep us away! Derek was joined by Ray Jelinek, Chris McMillan (The Shadow Over Portland), Tom Daufel, and Rick Myers (The Recovering Ubergeek), and they watched Santo el Enmascarado de Plata vs 'La invasión de los marcianos' (dir. Alfredo B. Crevenna), aka Santo vs. the Martian Invasion. But that wasn't all! As part of the Cinescopio film series, the gang was able to watch the short documentary Viva Lucha Libre (dir. Brad Bemis) as part of the double feature that evening.

Monster Kid Radio #075 - Interview with Argoman, Roger Browne

He fights robots, he thwarted the evil Queen of the World, and appears on Monster Kid Radio. Roger Browne, the man behind the mask of Argoman, The Fantastic Superman (dir. Sergio Grieco), generously spent some time on the phone with Derek for an interview for this episode of the podcast. Monster Kid Radio owes a huge thank you to Dorado Films for helping make this interview possible, and, of course, we also want to send Roger a huge thanks for answering all of Derek's questions!

Monster Kid Radio #074 - Daniel Horne and the Fairy Tale Threads of Frankenstein

Do you know who loves the classic Universal monster movies (aside from Derek)? Artist, sculptor, and easily one of the nicest guys you'll meet at a monster convention Daniel Horne. When he's not creating one of his beautiful monster portraits or sculpting a gorgeous monster mask, Daniel watches these movies on a screen he's set up on one wall of his studio. In fact, he told Derek off mic that he actually had The Ghost of Frankenstein playing in the background while they talked about this film, their mutual appreciation for all the skilled men and women who worked to create these movies, and the fairy tale quality of all the classic Universal monster films.

Monster Kid Radio #073 - The Ghost of Frankenstein and Daniel Horne - Part One

Frankenstein's monster is an iconic image when it comes to classic monster movies, but is he outshined by Ygor (played masterfully by Béla Lugosi) in The Ghost of Frankenstein (dir. Erle C. Kenton)? Before you answer that question, listen to what Derek and this week's guest - Daniel Horne - has to say about the film! Daniel is an award-winning artist and sculptor, has appeared in the documentary The Aurora Monsters: The Model Craze That Gripped the World (dir. Cortlandt Hull, Dennis Vincent), and appears on Monster Kid Radio to talk about one of his favorite Frankenstein films. In Part One of their discussion, Derek and Daniel talk about the film's background, the cast and crew, and get into The Ghost...'s story.

Stephen D. Sullivan really likes The Son of Kong (dir. Ernest B. Schoedsack), and as his discussion about the film with Derek continues, you'll find out why! There are a number of successes present in the film (Robert Armstrong turns in a performance that rivals his performance in King Kong, Willis H. O'Brien's stop motion work is better than it has any rate to be considering the stress he was under at the time, and Max Steiner's score is just as moving as his work in the previous film) that makes The Son of Kong an underrated gem.

Monster Kid Radio #071 - The Son of Kong and Stephen D. Sullivan - Part One

Author and monster kid Stephen D. Sullivan (the madman behind The Tournament of Death 3) returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about a classic sequel that doesn't get nearly enough love - The Son of Kong (dir. Ernest B. Schoedsack). Released just nine months after the original King Kong, The Son of Kong follows what happened to filmmaker and showman Carl Denham after the Eighth Wonder of the world had his way with New York City. Here's a hint? Denham is on nobody's favorite persons list . . . except for Derek and Steve. They love him in this movie!

Long Live the King - The Legacy of Kong is the new documentary coming from Benevolent Monster Productions, and in this episode of Monster Kid Radio, Frank Dietz tells us how YOU can help support the film! Long Live the King is promising to be one of the year's best monster kid-centric documentaries, and Derek is excited to share the rest of his chat with Frank about the project. Also in this episode, Derek reviews some Listener Feedback, and because we've hit more than 35 reviews in the iTunes store, we announce what new special show will be added to your Monster Kid Radio experience (which will launch once we hit 50 honest reviews in the iTunes store).

Monster Kid Radio #069 - A chat with Frank Dietz (Beast Wishes, Long Live the King) Part One & Stephen D. Sullivan's Tournament of Death

Join the crowd and join Monster Kid Radio this week to talk about two upcoming crowd-funded projects! First, artist/actor/screenwriter/filmmaker Frank Dietz joins Derek in Part One of an interview on MKR to talk a little bit about his career and background. (If you listen carefully, you might hear Derek's heart skip a beat when Frank talks about working with Julie Adams.) Frank's previous documentary Beast Wishes (which he co-directed with Trish Geiger in 2013) takes a loving look at Bob and Kathy Burns (two of the original monster kids!), and this year, he's tackling King Kong with Long Live the King - The Legacy of Kong. Secondly, returning guest Stephen D. Sullivan tells us how crazy he is when he enters Tournament of Death 3, a novel he's writing in 16 days over the course of the Winter Olympics. (Can you guess what Steve's favorite Winter Olympic sport is? Can you guess Derek's?)

Chris McMillan was also there, so he and Derek spent some time before and after the screening to talk about their history with the film and their overall thoughts. We also hear from one of our listeners/future guests about a . . . unique Kickstarter project he has in the works.

Joe first appeared on Monster Kid Radio last July (Episode 015 & Episode 016) to talk about the first Bud and Lou monster romp, and since then he and Derek have decided to tackle the rest of the Abbott and Costello Meet... films. In 1949, they found themselves mixed up in a murder mystery involving Boris Karloff and six other potential killers, and from the sounds of it, Lou Costello himself barely survived the experience!

Monster Kid Radio #060 - War of the Worlds with Tracey Morris - Part Two

The War of the Worlds (dir. Byron Haskin) isn't over! Tracey Morris continues her visit to Monster Kid Radio this week to help Derek fight back against the Martians in this classic science fiction film from the 50s. This film was an Academy Award-nominated motion picture, and deserves all of its accolades (just ask Tracey or Derek!).

Monster Kid Radio #059 - War of the Worlds with Tracey Morris - Part One

It's the end of the year, and the Martians have arrived! But that's okay - so has Disney, Indiana's Tracey Morris! Tracey returns to Monster Kid Radio this week to talk about the classic scifi alien invasion film The War of the Worlds (dir. Byron Haskin). What revelation does Derek make about himself in this episode? What 8-track did Tracey listen to growing up? And how do the special effects in this adaptation of this HG Wells' classic hold up today?

Monster Kid Radio #058 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, with Scott Morris - Part Two

Santa Claus isn't done conquering the Martians, and we're not done conquering this movie. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is on the way to becoming one of Derek's Christmas favorites, and you have returning guest Scott Morris to thank for that. Scott picked the film this week, and in Part Two of our discussion, he lists a few of his favorite scenes from the movie and shares with us just how deep his love of SCCtM really goes.

On Kimar, on Voldar, on Bomar, and Girmar! On Hargo, on Momar, on Rigna, on Dropo! We're deep in the holiday spirit here at Monster Kid Radio thanks to returning guest Scott Morris. He brought the movie Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (dir. Nicholas Webster) to the podcast this week, and he and Derek manage to get the film's theme song out of their heads long enough to talk about the film. We also have a few more holiday greetings from previous Monster Kid Radio guests.

Monster Kid Radio #056 - Christmas Greetings and Visiting Krampus

Last Friday the 13th, the Portland's 13th Door Haunted House threw open their doors to celebrate Christmas . . . with Krampus. Derek braved the haunted halls of the 13th Door that night, and will take you with him during the near ten-minute walk through. Before that, though, various guests of Monster Kid Radio past (and a few listeners) have called in their holiday greetings for everyone to hear!

Monster Kid Radio #053 - Cheesy B-Movies with Tom Biegler, Part Two

A monster that looks like it was made out of papier mâché, a were-jellyfish, and John Carradine - these are just a few of the topics brought up in Part Two of Derek's cheesy monster movie discussion with monster kid sculptor Tom Biegler. This time around, some of the movies Tom mentions are films Derek's never seen before, but next week for his birthday, Derek will sit down to watch at least one of them (we're looking at you, were-jellyfish). (Speaking of your host's birthday, since next week Derek is celebrating his 40th birthday, Monster Kid Radio's schedule will change a little bit. Instead of a show on Tuesday and Thursday, there will be only one show on Wednesday.) Also on today's episode, the winner of the Tom Biegler Island of Terror sculpt is announced!

Monster Kid Radio #052 - Cheesy B-Movies with Tom Biegler, Part One

Quick! Get some wine to go with this week's cheese! This week on Monster Kid Radio, Derek is joined by returning guest and sculptor Tom Biegler for a discussion of our favorite cheesy monster movies. We love 'em, but let's be honest. There's a solid layer of cheese on some of these flicks, which is a testament to the film's worth because we wouldn't love them any other way! During their discussion, John Agar is mentioned a few times (John Agar Rules!), and Derek tends to sidetrack a bit, but Tom keeps him on course. (And don't forget our 50-Review Challenge!)

Monster Kid Radio #051 - Scott & Tracey Morris' Monster Mania, Part Two

Last month, Scott and Tracey Morris left Disney, Indiana for a monster-filled weekend at the Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, Indiana. The event? Monster Mania. The movies? The Invisible Man (dir. James Whale), The Mummy (dir. Karl Freund), Frankenstein (dir. James Whale), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (dir. Jack Arnold). The host of this podcast? EXTREMELY jealous. Most of these movies were movies neither Scott nor Tracey had seen before seeing them at the Artcraft, and in Part Two of their Monster Mania debrief, they'll share their first time thoughts about these films and they even put up with Derek gushing about Creature...! Also, Derek reminds listeners how they can enter the drawing for the original sculpt of the Island of Terror silicates created and donated by previous Monster Kid Radio guest Tom Biegler. Last month, Scott and Tracey Morris (the high high-muckety-mucks of Disney, Indiana and returning guests to Monster Kid Radio) went to the Artcraft Theater's Monster Mania event in Franklin, Indiana. The 2-day event featured 35mm print screenings of six classic Universal monster films, and most of these films were first time viewings for Scott and Tracey. In Part One of their Monster Mania debrief, they tell Derek about the Artcraft and the two movies they watched on Day One of the event - Dracula (dir. Tod Browning) and The Wolf Man (dir. George Waggner). Before Monster Kid Radio was launched, Tom showed Derek a movie called Island of Terror (dir. Terence Fisher), and that movie quickly became one of Derek's favorite non-Hammer Peter Cushing films. Tom not only introduced Derek to this amazing movie, but he's also about to share another amazing piece of original art with one lucky Monster Kid Radio listener! Monster Kid Radio #037 - Monster Kid Friendly Disney with Scott Morris - Part Two

What Disney film did Derek's fifth grade teacher show him . . . that TERRIFIED him? Find out in this episode of Monster Kid Radio when Scott Morris join him for Part Two of their discussion of monster kid friendly Disney films. This time, Scott and Derek go over their top three scary Disney films. After getting scared by Mickey Mouse (for real!), Derek heads to Portland's Hollywood Theatre for a screening of 1974's The 7 Brothers Meet Dracula (dir. Roy Ward Baker, Cheh Chang). This was a Monster Kid Radio Crash, and Derek ran into a familiar face after the show - Chris McMillan from The Shadow Over Portland. Also in this episode, Derek checks out a television show from the 70s that ran by two different names - "Ghost Story" and "Circle of Fear." This series was recently released on DVD by Sony, and Derek will let you know if you need some Winston Essex in your life. Derek will also let you know if you need the movie Dawn of Dracula (dir. Blake Powell) in your life when he talks about the feature-length film from the gang from Midnite Mausoleum. Marlena Midnite and Robyn Graves aren't hosting horror movies anymore - now they're in one, and they've brought all their charm, humor, and quirkiness to this homage to 1970s Eurohorror. This is a PACKED episode of Monster Kid Radio, and if you listen close, you might hear an announcement about the Pacific Northwest Theatrical premiere of The Giant Spider (dir. Christopher R. Mihm).

Monster Kid Radio #034 - Rich Chamberlain, Bela Lugosi, and Boris Karloff - Part One

Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff are two of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio, and for good reason. Their films - especially the films they were in together - strike a strong chord in the hearts and minds of monster kids everywhere, and the Monster Movie Kid Rich Chamberlain returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about these two titans of classic terror. Were they more alike than some have led us to believe? Which one became a US citizen? Who did more radio work? Who had more wives? Rich and Derek talk about these two men in Part One of MKR's look at the sometimes parallel paths of Karloff and Lugosi.

Scott and Tracey Morris (both previous guests on Monster Kid Radio and high mucky-mucks of Disney, Indiana), attended HorrorHound Weekend Indianapolis earlier this month and attended the Ray Harryhausen Super-8 Tribute Show (and a bonus show!) hosted by We Are Movie Geeks' Tom Stockman. Since Derek has multiple medical issues this week, Scott and Tracey are covering the Super-8 show on this week's only episode of Monster Kid Radio. In mid-July, Rolling Stone published on their website the article "Best Monster Movies of All Time" by Alexis Murphy and Julian Ring. Why exactly is Swamp Thing on there? In Part One of Monster Kid Radio's reaction to this list, Derek looks at the twenty films that made Rolling Stone's list, agreeing with some of the picks, but disagreeing with others.

As the publisher of the 24-issue fanzine Lonny Jr., Paul McComas started writing about monsters before he was even a teenager, and he's still writing about them now. He co-wrote (with Greg Starrett) the short novel Fit for a Frankenstein as a tribute to all things Universal monsters with a particularly fond look at Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Ygor and the Frankenstein Monster as portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Paul and Derek talk about the genesis of this book as well as another role Lon Chaney, Jr., undertook - the Son of Dracula in the film of the same name (dir. Robert Siodmak). Along the way, they also talk about Jack Pierce, early goth girls, and . . . buying used books?

Monster Kid Radio #019 - Lon Chaney, Jr., and Paul McComas

Creighton Tull Chaney left us July 12, 1973, and he left so many classic films behind for us to remember him by. This week's guest was such a fan of the work of Creighton, aka Lon Chaney, Jr., that he started a fanzine called Lonny Jr....before he was even a teenager! Paul McComas has been affected by Chaney's work throughout his life, and just recently released the short novel Fit for a Frankenstein (co-authored by Greg Starrett) which visits the classic Frankenstein's Monster during a time when it was portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Paul is also a filmmaker, a public speaker, a teacher, and an advocate of RAINN, and has graciously taken some time to chat with us here at Monster Kid Radio. Lon wasn't just in werewolf films - Paul and Derek talk about other films in Chaney's filmography, Paul's favorite film of all time (it's not The Wolf Man), and how his own movie Blood of the Wolfman helped to finally solve Lawrence Talbot's curse while letting Paul pay tribute to a lost friend.
