Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff are two of the patron saints of Monster Kid Radio, and for good reason. Their films - especially the films they were in together - strike a strong chord in the hearts and minds of monster kids everywhere, and the Monster Movie Kid Rich Chamberlain returns to Monster Kid Radio to talk about these two titans of classic terror. Were they more alike than some have led us to believe? Which one became a US citizen? Who did more radio work? Who had more wives? Rich and Derek talk about these two men in Part One of MKR's look at the sometimes parallel paths of Karloff and Lugosi. Scott and Tracey Morris (both previous guests on Monster Kid Radio and high mucky-mucks of Disney, Indiana), attended HorrorHound Weekend Indianapolis earlier this month and attended the Ray Harryhausen Super-8 Tribute Show (and a bonus show!) hosted by We Are Movie Geeks' Tom Stockman. Since Derek has multiple medical issues this week, Scott and Tracey are covering the Super-8 show on this week's only episode of Monster Kid Radio. Attaboy, Chris! Derek and Chris McMillan (The Shadow Over Portland) continue their look at 1966's The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (dir. Alan Rifkin) in this is the movie in the MKR crosshairs this week. This was one of the first scary movies Chris saw as a kid, and it haunted it for years, appearing on television, and eventually making its way to his permanent movie collection. Chris and Derek continue to talk about the movie, riff about the film's score, and discuss how some of ...Mr. Chicken's elements might also be found in a popular cartoon amongst monster kids. The Shadow Over Portland's Chris McMillan is back on Monster Kid Radio, and this time he brings . . . Don Knotts? The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (dir. Why exactly IS Don Knotts character called "Mr. Chicken?" Chris and Derek answer some of these questions in this episode. In mid-July, Rolling Stone published on their website the article "Best Monster Movies of All Time" by Alexis Murphy and Julian Ring. Creighton Tull Chaney left us July 12, 1973, and he left so many classic films behind for us to remember him by. This week's guest was such a fan of the work of Creighton, aka Lon Chaney, Jr., that he started a fanzine called Lonny Jr....before he was even a teenager! Paul McComas has been affected by Chaney's work throughout his life, and just recently released the short novel Fit for a Frankenstein (co-authored by Greg Starrett) which visits the classic Frankenstein's Monster during a time when it was portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Paul is also a filmmaker, a public speaker, a teacher, and an advocate of RAINN, and has graciously taken some time to chat with us here at Monster Kid Radio. Lon wasn't just in werewolf films - Paul and Derek talk about other films in Chaney's filmography, Paul's favorite film of all time (it's not The Wolf Man), and how his own movie Blood of the Wolfman helped to finally solve Lawrence Talbot's curse while letting Paul pay tribute to a lost friend. Derek might be reaching, but he DOES find something slightly Lovecraftian in 1958's The Fly (dir. Kurt Neumann). He and illusrator Devon Devereaux continue their talk about this film, its sequels, the remakes, and its influence. This is part two of a two-part chat; part one appeared in Episode #005. At the end of the episode, Derek records from the parking lot of the Joy Cinema and Pub (Tigard, OR) and talks about their continuing Weird Wednesday series, as well as an upcoming screening of Plan 9 from Outer Space. Illustrator Devon Devereaux (Tales of Hot Rod Horror) joins Derek at Monster Kid Radio, and brings Vincent Price with him! Devon picked the movie he and Derek will be talking about this week - 1958's The Fly (dir. Kurt Neumann). (It'd been several years since Derek had watched The Fly, and refreshingly, the movie still shocked him!) This is part one of a two-part chat; part two will appear in Episode #006. Derek introduces Episode #004 of Monster Kid Radio from the parking lot of the Joy Cinema and Pub right before he heads in for a screening of 1967's She-Freak (dir. Byron Mabe). The Joy Cinema's ongoing Weird Wednesday series features movies like this week's She-Freak, next week's The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman (dir. León Klimovsky), and upcoming titles like Plan 9 From Outer Space (dir. Edward D. Wood, Jr.), so look forward to that! Continuing in this episode is Part Two of Derek's chat with director Christopher R. Mihm and monster-maker Mitch Gonzales about the future of the Mihmiverse, giant bug monster movies, and the influences on their work.

Derek looks at the three actors whose names are part of the Monster Kid Radio slogan, and challenges himself to come up with a Top Three favorite film list for each one of them. As with the Top Three Favorite Monster Movie list from Episode #001, this proves to be difficult, and by the time this episode lands in the Monster Kid Radio feed, Derek will have probably changed his mind about at least one or two of the films mentioned! (This episode was recorded at Wonder Northwest last weekend, but before its release, director Eddie Romero passed away on May 28, 2013. RIP.) |
